In North Carolina, that’s probably blasphemy, but it’s the truth. I’m just not that interested in the big dance anymore. Why? I’m glad you asked. It’s because I don’t know any of the kids. Remember those days when teams would reach the finals, lose, and players would come back hungry for a shot at it again? Yeah ... that doesn’t happen anymore. I knew before the season began that Kentucky’s entire roster would declare for the NBA draft as soon as the season ended, regardless whether the Wildcats won the title or not. The days of the superstars playing for our favorite schools for an extended period of time are gone. Michael Jordan was at UNC for three years. Grant Hill was at Duke for four years. Tim Duncan was at Wake Forest for four years. Sure, there are exceptions. There are kids who play at schools like Wisconsin, Butler and other schools that stay the entire four years. They can make the dance entertaining, but I just can’t stand the idea of the best basketball players in the country stepping on the court for one year and then it’s off to the NBA. The “one and done” rule is terrible. I’d almost rather them not go to college at all. I mean, why not just let them pull a Kobe Bryant or a LeBron James? That’s better than some false allegiance to a school that is nothing more than a stepping stone. The whole system is ridiculously flawed, and I think the NBA and the NCAA should address it. We’re talking about 18- and 19-year-old kids going to college for two semesters of classes and then stepping into million-dollar contracts. Are they even ready for that? I remember when I was 19. I would’ve found a way to spend a few million dollars. And then there’s the effect on the NBA. Not all of these kids become superstars. Not everyone can be Kobe, LeBron or Chris Paul. I stopped watching the NBA long before I quit paying as much attention to college basketball as I do. NBA rosters are filled with kids who should’ve stayed in college longer and developed their game. I know I’m not the first sports writer to write about this, and I won’t be the last. With the latest flurry of declarations for the draft, I just couldn’t hold back. A lot of folks may have a different opinion, but for me, college basketball is nowhere near as awesome as it was in the 90s and earlier. From UNLV to Duke to the Fab Five, the ’90s were awesome as were the decades before. That’s because we had a few years to love players like Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Vince Carter, Tim Duncan and a host of other players. We connected with them because they cared enough to stay in college for multiple years. They were loyal. It’d be nice if players these days cared enough for the fans and the schools giving them scholarships to come back for another year. Maybe then I’d care enough to fill out a set of brackets.
