SOU ROUNDUP No. 8 Raiders to host first-round playoff game SOU draws No. 9 MidAmerica Nazarene; SOU volleyball team also qualifies for NAIA playoffs By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 16, 2014 @ 6:49 pm By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 16, 2014 @ 6:49 pm » Social News KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the first time in 12 years, the NAIA Football Championship Series is returning to Raider Stadium next Saturday for round one of the 16-team playoff. Southern Oregon University (9-2 overall) woke up Sunday to a No. 8 ranking in the NAIA top 25 — a four-spot dip as a result of Saturday's 31-27 loss to Eastern Oregon — which put the Raiders in line to host the ninth-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) Pioneers. Tickets will go on sale and a kickoff time will be announced Tuesday morning. Fans will be able to purchase tickets online at souraiders.com/tickets. Season tickets and other passes are not valid for the NAIA playoffs. The Pioneers (9-1), who shared the Heart of America Athletic Conference championship, will ride a six-game win streak into Ashland for their 12th all-time NAIA FCS appearance. They've never played the Raiders head-to-head in any sport. SOU edged out MidAmerica by just two points in the top-25 poll, 239-237. The Raiders last went to the postseason in 2012, making a run to the quarterfinals that ended with an overtime loss at Morningside (Iowa). They received an at-large bid for the fifth NAIA FCS appearance. SOU is 4-0 in the first round but has never made it past the second. The Raider offense will face a defense that ranks fourth in the NAIA in points allowed per game (15.6) and has held three of its last five opponents to seven points or less. The Pioneers also rank fifth in passing yards allowed per game (139.6). MidAmerica Nazarene's only loss was at Central Methodist, which finished with a record of 5-6. The Pioneers went 3-0 against ranked opponents this season but is No. 23 in the Hensley power rankings, which has them with the 50th-toughest schedule in the NAIA. Their trip from Olathe, Kan. — the fourth-most populated city in the state — will span about 1,800 miles. The playoff field is not bracketed, meaning the teams will be re-seeded after each round, and some pairing may be made based on geographical convenience. Morningside (Iowa) was upset Saturday, allowing Carroll to move to No. 1 in the rankings. The Saints won the Frontier Conference outright and will host 14th-ranked Valley City State (N.D.). Despite its upset at Raider Stadium, Eastern Oregon moved up just one spot to No. 15 in the rankings and was the first team left out of the field. The Mountaineers have never qualified for the NAIA FCS. SOU had won seven straight at home against ranked opponents until Saturday. Volleyball A No. 17 ranking in Sunday's final NAIA top-25 poll made it official: Southern Oregon University is back in the NAIA volleyball playoffs. In fact, it appears as if the NAIA volleyball playoffs will soon be back in Southern Oregon. The Raiders (22-5 overall), who lost Friday to Concordia in the Cascade Conference tournament quarterfinals, dropped four spots from 13th in the rankings but still received the seventh of nine at-large bids to the 36-team NAIA playoffs. They qualified for the first time since 2011. Matchups for the first round, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 12 different campus sites, will be announced today. The top 11 teams in the rankings and tournament host Briar Cliff (Iowa) get first-round byes to the final site — the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. That puts the Raiders in line to host the first round, but their opponent won't necessarily be determined by ranking; geography will play a part in the NAIA's decision, too. If SOU is to host, ticket information and match times will become available soon after matchups are revealed. College of Idaho earned the CCC's automatic bid into the playoffs by winning the conference tournament championship. Eastern Oregon, ranked 14th in the final poll, received an at-large bid to qualify for the first time in program history. Women's Basketball Five players scored in double figures as the 21st-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team hit the century mark for the second time this season Sunday afternoon in a 107-80 win over Pacific Union at Riehm Arena. The Raiders (4-0 overall) got game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds from Alexi Smith and a bonus double-double from 6-foot-4 freshman Courtney West, who had career-highs of 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Carly Meister and Autumn Durand scored 15 points apiece, Kristen Schoenherr added 10, and the Raiders shot 54 percent from the field (41-for-76), building a 52-33 lead by halftime. SOU has shot at least 49 percent in every game this season. Twenty-six of the Raiders' buckets were assisted Sunday. Demi Sahlinger had six off the bench, Ashley Claussen had five with three steals, and Tiani Bradford added nine points and four assists. Majerle Reeves made all three of her field-goal attempts, including two triples, for a career-high nine points. SOU's largest lead was 31 when a West layup made it 82-51 with 7:47 left. The Pioneers (0-3) had six players in double figures, led by Rachael Hahn's 17 points. They shot 40 percent (28-for-70) as a team.
