PHOENIX SHOOTING Suspect in fatal Phoenix shooting apprehended Fight started inside 7-Eleven; one suspect taken into custody Comment By Nick Morgan For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Nick Morgan For the Tidings Posted Apr. 2, 2016 at 2:00 AM By Nick Morgan For the Tidings Posted Apr. 2, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News A fight involving three males that started inside the 7-Eleven just outside Phoenix Friday evening spilled out into the street, ending in a shooting that left one dead in the middle of South Pacific Highway and one man in custody, police said. One gunshot ended the fight outside the convenience store at the intersection of South Pacific Highway and North Rose Street, said Sgt. Eric Fox of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. The shooting was reported at about 6:35 p.m. and triggered a manhunt by officers from several agencies in the area in search of an armed and considered active shooter. It ended with one man taken into custody, but Jackson County Sheriff Corey Falls declined to identify the man or say whether police believe he was the triggerman they were seeking. Falls, however, said late Friday that investigators were "not looking for a second suspect" but that police would continue searching for others involved in fight that culminated in the shooting. Falls did not release any names or ages. He said the investigation was continuing and police were reviewing surveillance footage from 7-Eleven. South Pacific Highway remained closed at North Rose Street deep into Friday night. Two males fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving the victim's body in the middle of the roadway, police said. Witnesses said it was eventually covered with a blanket and it was removed from the scene at about 8:30 p.m. as police fanned through downtown Phoenix, a nearby trailer park and even the Bear Creek Greenway in search of the suspects. Falls did not say when or where the suspect was taken into custody, whether he was found by police or turned himself in. Phoenix High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Toby Walker said he had heard there was some kind of disturbance at lunchtime at that same 7-Eleven but did not know details. He said the school was never put on lockdown during school hours. "Right now we don't know if it's any of our students involved," Walker said Friday evening. It was also not immediately known whether that disturbance had anything to do with the shooting. —Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or by email at [email protected].
