Find prior episodes at www.dailytidings.com. Yesterday, Blue gave me a homework assignment in preparation for undercover work for our new client. I had to create a character, based upon a dreadlocked woman, who we’d seen walking her chicken in downtown Talent. I had to make up a convincing backstory and dress in character. I’d dug through my props and costumes from the murder mystery shows I’d produced over the years, but came up short. Most of my costumes were for a disco-whodunit and a jazz-infused mystery. I needed dreadlocks, Birkenstocks and crystals. Luckily Jasmine has a dreadlock wig from a costume party and a pair of sandals that were slightly too big. I just wore two pairs of socks with them. I didn’t have a chicken however, so I decided that this chicken was abducted in a fowl custody battle. I was ready for prime time. In costume, I walked into Blue Investigations for my interview, an empty blue chicken harness dangling from my wrist, along with several Guatemalan friendship bracelets. The wig itched horribly. “Hello there. How can I help you?” said Blue. “Namaste. I’m Sunshine Trallee and I’m hoping you can help me find my sweet chicken, Dolores,” I said, shaking Blue’s hand. Blue hid a grin and ushered me into her office. I took a chair, fidgeting with my chicken harness. “Why don’t you tell me what happened?” asked Blue, pulling out her notebook. “Well, I suspect that my ex, Griselda, took Dolores. But she had no right to.” “When did this happen?” asked Blue. “Yesterday. I was walking Dolores down this very street, Talent Avenue, just yesterday. I stopped at the used bookstore and tied up Dolores outside. But when I came out 20 minutes later, she was gone. Just her harness was there.” Strangely, I felt a lump rising in my throat. “What makes you think that, uh, Griselda took Dolores?” asked Blue. “We had a fight about splitting up our animals when we separated. She thought all the chickens should stay together. But Dolores was my pet. I’d raised her from a chick.” I felt like crying. “And where is Griselda now?” asked Blue. “I know right where she is. She lives in Methford now. She works at Top Crest winery, as an assistant winemaker.” I twisted in my seat. So far so good. “Couldn’t you just go talk with her?” asked Blue “I don’t go to Dreadford. Not ever.” I felt Sunshine’s outrage at Blue’s question. “So what would you like me to do? Keep in mind that I charge $30 an hour, plus expenses.” Blue leaned forward. “I need you to go there and talk with Griselda. And if that doesn’t work, I want you to find Dolores and bring her home. Here’s a picture of her.” I gave Blue a photo of a Rhode Island Red. “I see. Do you have any paperwork that proves Dolores belongs to you?” “I do. Here’s the list of things that we each agreed to keep. See? Dolores is on my list. And we both signed it too.” I gave Blue a coffee-stained, crumpled piece of paper. “Hmmm. Well, how about I go speak with Griselda today and see what happens? Can I borrow this list?” “Please do. Oh, and Dolores has a small crystal tied around her neck, for protection.” “That helps. I’ll let you know what I find out.” Blue turned around and took some notes. I took off my itching wig and shook my hair out. “So, how did I do?” I asked. “Not bad. Not bad at all.” Blue grinned.
