ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL Pep band conductor, 3.98 student Wurfl earns Rotary kudos Wurfl named student of the month By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 12, 2014 @ 5:35 pm By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 12, 2014 @ 5:35 pm » RELATED CONTENT • Your child's best best bet for success? It's you » Social News Already an accomplished student who’s traveled across the world for a year-long immersion program in Slovakia, Ashland High School senior Lili Wurfl now has something else to hang her hat on: Rotary Club of Ashland Student of the Month. Wurfl will accept the award during a ceremony Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St. One of Ashland High’s busiest students, Wurfl is a drum major who is the conductor of the AHS pep band, a member of the National Honors Society, a two-sport varsity athlete (swimming and water polo) and an usher at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Wurfl also carries a stellar 3.98 GPA, missing a perfect 4.0 thanks to a pesky A-minus in child psychology. “That’ll probably stay with me for the rest of my life,” she said. Wurfl was also a counselor at both Fresh Start and SOU Academy. Wurfl said her trip to Slovakia during her junior year as part of a Rotary exchange program was rough going early on but turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of her life. “It was amazing,” she said. “It was really hard the first three months because I didn’t know a lick of Slovakian, but by four or five months I started to understand, by seven months I was speaking and by eight or nine months I was totally fluent. The last few months I made the most amazing memories and it was pretty hard to leave.” Now that she’s back, Wurlf is concentrating on finishing high school and deciding where to attend college. She completed a five-school tour through the East coast on Thursday that included stops at New York University and the University of Vermont, but returned in time to conduct the AHS pep band during the Friday night football game between Ashland and Crater. It’s early, but so far Wurfl, who plans to major in neuroscience or chemistry (“I’m really interested in psychology of the brain”) says NYU is the front-runner, at least for now. “I’m definitely an extrovert,” she said, “but when it comes to learning I’m really independent. When I was there (at NYU) I could see the students were like that, too.” Wurfl said she received the news about the student of the month award while walking through Washington Square Park in Manhattan. Her reaction was spontaneous. “I was jumping up and yelling, and it was a really crowded place,” she said. “I was in a really crowded place, but I was so excited. I feel so honored and overall just really happy.” Joe Zavala is a reporter for the Ashland Daily Tidings.
