LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 25 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 25, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Aug. 25, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> The real issue Clearly the person writing the Tidings editorial about removing contaminated dirt from property owned by the railroad did not do his/her homework. The real issue is requiring the railroad to clean all 20 acres, not just 2 acres,  and  to remove the contaminated soil by rail. This is an agreement the railroad approved as far back as 2006, and is the most cost-effective method with the fewest impacts to streets and the environment. City leaders must hold the railroad accountable for properly cleaning the entire site and removing the material by rail — which is far more than a few truckloads of oily dirt. If the Tidings regularly sent a reporter to City Council meetings, there would be a better understanding of this and many other issues leading to better informed, less snarky editorials. Karen Smith Ashland Congrats to Schumer A column by Dan Thomasson (Aug. 18) criticizes Sen. Charles Schumer for deciding to vote against Obama's surrender to Iran. He's no different from any other senator. They all respond to the wishes of their constituents. That's why they're elected. I congratulate Senator Schumer for doing what is best for his country, not what is best for Obama or the Democratic Party. Jews have the same rights all Americans have. They have the right to disagree with the president without having their loyalty to America questioned. One atomic bomb dropped on Israel by Obama's friend Iran will annihilate 6 million Jews. That's why any Jew with half a brain opposes Obama's surrender to Iran. Maynard Telpner Talent Merkley should explain I recently had the opportunity to review the speech Sen. Jeff Merkley gave in November of last year during the debate on the Keystone XL Pipeline. The views expressed by our senator gave me pride as an Oregonian. Merkley spoke of the danger to the environment and the impact on climate change that would result from Keystone XL, the injustice of a foreign company taking the land of Americans for private interest and private gain, as well as the failure of the project to generate safe and sustainable jobs. He spoke for over 15 minutes, accompanied by charts and data. His performance then makes his continued support of the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline a bewildering and disappointing paradox. Every point that he made then, and since, in opposition to the Keystone XL, can also be made with regard to the LNG pipeline. Stand Up for Oregon! No Pipeline, No LNG. That's the new name for the campaign to stop this threat to us all. Why would our senator not consider protecting the homes and way of life of fellow Oregonians as important as Keystone and stand up for Oregon, as well. Please explain, Senator Merkley.
