The path ahead can only get smoother if the 13th-ranked Raiders (22-4 overall, 16-2 CCC) are able to execute a successful run through the CCC Championships this weekend. The tournament's semifinals pit them against third-seeded Concordia (18-8, 14-4) at 4 p.m. today, while 11th-ranked Eastern Oregon (26-3, 16-2) and fourth-seeded College of Idaho (17-11, 13-5) are in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start Saturday. Co-champion Eastern Oregon won the tiebreaker with SOU, giving the Mountaineers the top overall seed and host responsibilities inside their own Quinn Coliseum. The regular-season title was EOU's first in 27 years of CCC play. Concordia, which just lost in four sets at SOU last Friday but snuck into the NAIA rankings at No. 24 anyway, had to win a quarterfinal match against Oregon Tech (25-23, 25-16, 27-29, 25-20) on Tuesday to advance. Likewise, College of Idaho moved on with a win over Northwest (25-23, 25-14, 25-16). The winner of the tournament gets an automatic spot in the 36-team NAIA field. SOU and EOU are likely to be in it anyway, but if one of them wins then that team should be ranked high enough to skip the 12-match opening round and head right to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa, on Dec. 2-6. Even if they don't win a match, the Raiders are already in good position to host an opening-round match on Nov. 22, but a semifinal victory would pretty much seal it. The final NAIA top-25 poll will be released Sunday, and the opening-round pairings will be revealed Monday. About the field: The names in the final-four are no surprise. They've been the same now the last three seasons. During that time these teams have gone a combined 137-7 against the rest of the conference. Eighth-year SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing — who last led the Raiders to a tournament championship in 2011 on College of Idaho's home floor — believes this field is the strongest yet. It's the only one that's featured three teams holding spots in the NAIA rankings. "There won't be a lot of weaknesses on the floor," Rohlfing said. "Anyone could win and it wouldn't be at all surprising." College of Idaho, which went 0-4 against SOU and EOU this season, has won six of the last seven tournaments. SOU won three straight before that run. The Raiders were bounced by C of I in the semifinals as the No. 4 seed in 2013. They haven't met Concordia in the CCC tournament since 2001 (a loss), but beat the Cavs in the NAIA regional tournament in 2002 and 2003. First up: The Raiders had lost three straight against Concordia dating back to last season until Friday's win. The Cavaliers put SOU on the ropes again at Riehm Arena, but SOU fought off three match-points to win the fourth set, 31-29, and dominated the fifth, 15-8. The Raiders went 5-0 in five-set matches during CCC play. The Cavaliers won the first meeting on Sept. 20 in Portland, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19. Concordia's 6-foot setter, Jenessa Taylor, has picked on the Raiders with 91 assists, 28 digs and 14 kills in nine sets. Lindsey Dorsey (30 kills), Ashley Jibby (27 kills) and Brianna Hogan (23 kills) have also been effective. "They're really good at handling the ball and they don't hurt themselves," Rohlfing said. "It's difficult playing a team back-to-back weeks, but it's even tougher against a team that doesn't give you points. We have an incredible amount of respect for them." Motade Atanda posted 19 kills and 15 digs Friday, and Paulla Pinheiro has 29 kills and 29 digs in the two matches. The first time around, SOU was limited to a .093 attacking average — its second-worst this season. In conference play, Concordia and SOU matched each other as the top teams in blocks per set (2.6) and opponents' hitting average (.135).
