Linn Posted Sep. 24, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News A very prominent Ashland lady died a quiet death recently and few will know about it because there will be no obituary or funeral or even a news article. And she was young, just over 50. You may even have seen her at the Ashland Community Hospital's gift shop at the east entrance or in the registration area at the west entrance or as a same-day surgery escort or taking blood pressure or at the Golden Girls Coffee Shop or maybe she helped you find your way. Or if you worked at the hospital you may have seen her at one of her fundraisers to help support Ashland Community Hospital and its services through a bake sale or scrub sale or jewelry sale or orchid sale. Behind the scenes she may restock the emergency room supplies or knit stockings into which to put newborns at Christmas time or make favors for food trays. Though she was just over 50, she was familiar to many of us who grew up with her in Ashland and we were glad to be greeted by her at Ashland Community Hospital when we had to go there. She may have helped you navigate the hospital and its new addition or get a wheelchair or provide a sympathetic voice or ear and always a friendly smile. And in many instances over the years you may have been greeted/welcomed by that lady who you may have known and/or who knew you because she was a local citizen. You may or may not have known her background: maybe during her earlier career she was in education as a teacher or administrator, maybe she was in the legal profession as a lawyer or office manager, maybe she was a professional in government or the space agency or travel agency or real estate or food service or even health care or, equally important, a homemaker. She may have been the spouse of another active local citizen and welcomed this opportunity to be of service to her community while living locally or retiring here. Over the years she raised over $200,000 for the hospital and donated thousands of hours as a volunteer for which many of us give thanks. Yes, the local, self-governing volunteer organization of Pink Ladies, because they wore pink smocks while on volunteer duty, no longer exists at Ashland Community Hospital. They were required to disband after over 50 years of quality efficient volunteer service as previously written — service endorsed and encouraged and some even requested by Ashland Community Hospital. They were our unsung local pride and joy, working quietly and effectively, accountable to each other, their organization, Ashland Community Hospital and to he patients.
