Titled the Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit, it will display the work of 88 masters, invited from all over the world, including seven from the Rogue Valley. “It’s an opportunity to learn, attend workshops, see exhibits and buy mosaic art,” said John Sollinger, a geneticist with Southern Oregon University. His large-format, detailed works from nature will be on solo exhibit at SOU’s Hannon Library, open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m. on First Friday. Then, starting at 5 p.m. Friday during the First Friday art walk, 30 mosaic artists will show and sell their work at Illahe Studios & Gallery. Forty-two artists will be exhibited Saturday and Sunday at Belle Fiore Winery, 955 Dead Indian Memorial Road. Showing his work at a pre-summit interview, Sollinger said his process is very meditative and he’s happy to execute two or three works a year. He said he listens to the same country music CD during his work on an individual piece, replaying it hundreds of times. Each piece has the uncanny way of looking a bit chaotic up close, but like a photograph at 10 feet away. “I had a calling and found what I wanted to be doing,” said Sollinger. It sprang from a 2007 class at NeoGlassic Studio in Medford, “and I was hooked. What do I like about it? It never talks back. I can shut out the world.” His stunning “Snowfell” was shown at the Mosaics of the World exhibit last year in Ravenna, Italy. So endeared is Sollinger to his creations that he is loathe to sell them and puts very high price tags on them, to enhance his odds of keeping them. How high? Try $20,000. But he notes that his “Of Eden,” showing Shasta daisies in the forest, will soon go for that price. Ellis, whose work is consistently displayed at Nimbus in downtown Ashland but will have a special showing there of works for the weekend, said she got the bug by sheer chance, having to hole up in a distant hotel and wait for her husband to get ambulatory after a knee operation. A friend told her she would go nuts watching TV and reading, so she brought over supplies and instructions for entry-level mosaic art. “I was hooked instantly when I started gluing the pieces on a vase,” said Ellis. “It’s so renewing and takes me out of the day-to-day world. I’ve always been good at crafts and working with my hands, but this was really it.” Ellis explained that she first cuts and fuses her mosaic pieces in a kiln, then affixes them to various three-dimensional matrices, including vases. Three of her vases will sell in the $700 to $1,800 range, while a 3-D mosaic ballerina will be around $11,000. Most world-class mosaic exhibits are in big cities and do not invite in the general public, but this one, the first ever for CMA, will break both those rules, with the public welcomed not only to buy, but take classes and get the mosaic bug, Ellis said. Workshops include: • “FUNdamento: Shape + Direction = Flow," by Kelley Knickerbocker, Saturday or Sunday, $160; • “Rajasthani Tapestry Mosaics," by Laurel Skye, two days, $330; • “Micro Mosaics as Jewelry and as Art Form," by Mireille Swinnen, Saturday or Sunday, $240; and • "Introduction to Glass Mosaics," by Joanne Chase, two days, $200.
