LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Oct. 1 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News 'Gather' not appropriate Ashland was listed as one of the world’s Top Ten Places for Geotourism by the National Geographic Society as reported in the Jan. 8, 2009, issue of the Mail Tribune. (Geotourism was defined as "tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place.”) Also included were the Norwegian fjords and Scotland's Isle of Skye. The listing reported that Ashland was one of the USA's most historic and appealing small towns. George Kramer, a former chairman of the Ashland Historic Commission, wrote a guest opinion piece in the Sept. 19 issue of the Ashland Daily Tidings entitled “Gateway art process failed.” He cited that the failure was due to a policy wherein “the Ashland Historic Commission has been specifically excluded and superseded from the public art process.” To exclude that commission from the public art process for the Downtown Historic District means that there hasn’t been adequate “institutional memory” to ensure that the chosen public art — regardless of its artistic worthiness — is appropriate for that district (“institutional memory” is defined in Wikipedia as “a collective set of facts, concepts, experiences and know-how held by a group of people”). Having seen no indication that the competing artists — or the Public Arts Commission — had the benefit of Ashland’s institutional memory via the Historic Commission, the resulting winning artwork doesn’t appear to me to be consistent with the internationally recognized character of the Downtown Historic District. In other words, it appears that “Gather” is not appropriate. Roy Sutton Ashland Kiwanis says thanks Ashland Auto Parts and owner Sherman Peters recently donated two emergency yellow safety lights to Ashland Kiwanis to replace two lights no longer working properly. We place these lights on the top of pickups used to deliver U.S. flags to the sites of businesses and others who subscribe to our Flag Program, a major fundraiser. These lights help to keep our drivers and volunteers safe while distributing the flags. Thanks again! Ron Parker Ashland Kiwanis Club Exxon betrayed humanity During the '70s and '80s, Exxon’s scientists studied climate change. Their results showed carbon dioxide, the petroleum combustion by-product, was a major factor causing global warming and that swift action was necessary to avoid costly consequences. In the late '90s, Exxon rejected these scientific conclusions and hired the same spin merchants the tobacco industry used decades before to deny health hazards of tobacco. Again, the goal was to create public doubt by distorting accepted science. Due to the fossil fuel corporation campaign of denial, we now have a far more difficult and costly challenge ahead of us: to stem the climate chaos they are causing. We know the petroleum industry has unbridled power. But did we know that they have long been denying their own climate research that confirmed global warming? Think of the climate denial this campaign has generated, the Congress of science deniers it has elected. Think what has been lost because of these ‘merchants of doubt’. Why haven’t news sources covered this? Why aren’t we screaming about this injustice? We are accustomed to being ignored by corporate executives. Exxon should be held accountable; they have been immoral in their actions. By their actions, Exxon betrayed humanity.
