LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 28 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 28, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 28, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Full disclosure As artistic director of Thanks for the Memories Theatre, I love theatre and community and have been striving to pursue my passion, dream and the reason I get up in the morning. The truth is I had secured the zoning permit, but was struggling greatly with the building permit, because I needed a set of drawings that could only be done by an architect that I did not have the money for. I did submit a set of the original building designs and obtained a letter from a local architect, who drafted this as a favor to me, but it was not what the city Building Department would accept. I had been thinking of patron and actor safety, which was why I made an emergency exit plan, had fire extinguishers and exit signs professionally installed and all non-exits marked. In addition I had obtained insurance coverage for the building that would protect people as they walked through the doors. A conversation did take place between myself and the fire marshal the day the show was scheduled to be performed. Both the fire marshals and myself were thinking about the safety of others. I do care about those involved in theater and this community when it comes to safety and have a great deal of respect for the law. Thanks for the Memories Theatre was a dream to bring another option of theater with a sense of morals to the community that would be all about the community and those in it, to help better build on this amazingly active theater scene. I apologize. I love Ashland. I love theater. I love where I work and I am proud of all these people around me and am grateful to call this place home. A huge thanks to the cast and crews, volunteers, board members, audiences and supporters! Peter Wickliffe Thanks for the Memories Theatre Save the cottonwood The year is 1765 (give or take a few years). The Fremont Cottonwood on Villard off of Clay Street was just a sprout. There were no streets, just maybe a trail or path that the Native Americans made. America was just 11 years away from the Declaration of Independence. Cottonwoods were markers to Native Americans and to the early settlers that water was near. The Native Americans honored the tree. Eventually the Fremont Cottonwood became a beloved tree on a farm in the valley, around 1890. Children most likely played under it and probably climbed it as well. The owners cooled off under her branches, for lunch, in the summer heat, after working hard since sunup. The Fremont Cottonwood is a part of the history of Ashland and a symbol of strength and beauty, as well as a symbol of Ashland's Tree City status and our love for trees. She is a historic landmark here, if only in her life, and as such, should be saved and honored, partly to be an example to other cities that we honor not only this tree, but our status as Tree City and all our other trees. The Tree of the Year award is a testament to this city’s commitment to trees and a developer who could find a way to build around this phenomenal tree would prevent the travesty of cutting her down and also become a symbol of creativity and generosity. Creativity in what people can come up with in building around the tree and generosity in saving the tree — making it a special place for kids and adults alike to admire and draw strength from, as well as to learn about. And keep our honor in being Tree City. Please save this tree!!
