SOU's Atanda earns third player of week award Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 10, 2014 at 7:54 PM Posted Nov. 10, 2014 at 7:54 PM » Social News Motade Atanda's transformation into one of the top volleyball players in the Cascade Conference was reinforced again Monday when she was voted the Red Lion offensive player of the week for the third time this season. Atanda, a senior outside hitter for 13th-ranked Southern Oregon, helped the Raiders clinch a conference co-championship over the weekend with 43 kills in two matches (nine sets) — attacking at a .231 clip Friday against Concordia and a .333 clip Saturday against Warner Pacific, bringing her season average to .203. In Friday's match, one of Atanda's 19 kills broke Concordia's match-point in the fourth set. The Raiders (22-4 overall, 16-2 CCC) would go on to win in five, and Atanda added 15 digs. She had a career-high 24 kills on 45 swings in just four sets the next night. Atanda has recorded 15-plus kills 14 times this season and 20-plus kills seven times. She ranked first among all CCC players in conference matches at 4.3 kills per set. In 2013 she appeared in 13 matches and had 17 kills all season. Casey Loper, the CCC's 2013 player of the year, is the only other individual to have been named player of the week three times this year. The Raiders, who hadn't won a title since 2010, have a bye in the quarterfinals of the CCC tournament and will play a semifinal match Friday in La Grande against an opponent yet to be determined. SOU football jumps to No. 4 in NAIA rankings The Southern Oregon University football team jumped up one spot to No. 4 in the NAIA rankings Monday, following Saturday's 45-33 win at Montana Tech that improved SOU to 9-1 overall and 8-1 in the Frontier Conference. The Raiders have been in the top 10 for nine straight weeks. Their opponent in Saturday's regular-season finale at Raider Stadium, Eastern Oregon (7-3), went from 21st to 16th. The game against the Mountaineers will be SOU's fourth against a ranked foe this year, and if the Raiders win they'll have broken the program record for wins in a season and claimed their second Frontier title in three years. SOU moved up because of then-No. 4 Faulkner's 30-21 loss at 25th-ranked Campbellsville on Saturday. Here's how close top-25 voters consider the top teams to be: Faulkner dropped from fourth to 10th despite the game being away from home and against a ranked opponent. And how costly is a hit like the one taken by Faulkner? It is likely the difference between hosting two rounds and being on the road for a first-round game in the 16-team NAIA Championship Series. The playoff pairings will be announced Sunday. If SOU defeats Eastern, it will almost certainly host a first-round game on Nov. 22 and could be in line to host twice. A loss on their homefield, however, could mean no home games for the Raiders, judging by the tendencies of voters this season. Defending champ Morningside collected all 15 first-place votes again this week, Carroll was No. 2 and Grand View was No. 3.
