Jackson County Winter Weather: Hazard Alerts And School Closures News By Diane Megaw On Feb 5, 2025 Last updated Feb 5, 2025 JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — Effective immediately, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) issued a Winter Weather Advisory yesterday in light of the moderate snowfall and overnight sub-freezing temperatures expected over the next two days. Hazardous conditions led to the public safety announcement and many schools in Jackson County will also be closed or have delayed starting times while the conditions continue. Jackson County Winter Weather Alerts The current winter storm is expected to create hazardous roadways and significantly affect travel. The weather has burdened Jackson County deputies, who diligently respond to standard service calls and weather-related crises. With heavy snow and sub-freezing temperatures expected, JCSO warned residents to prepare for wintery conditions, especially overnight. There is an increased risk of accidents because of the slick and dangerous roads resulting from the storm. JCSO provided these tips to stay safe in the winter storm: Stay at home if possible Don’t drive unless it’s absolutely necessary. Prioritize your safety: Staying at home means avoiding accidents on slippery roads. Monitor the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office website and social media pages for non-emergency incidents. For emergencies, dial 911. If you have to drive during the storm conditions: Reducing the number of vehicles on the road helps emergency services to operate more effectively. Limit travel to essential travel and postpone non-essential trips. Check the weather forecasts and stay informed about changing conditions through local news and weather apps. Drive slowly and cautiously, reducing speed and increasing following distances. Avoid sudden braking or steering maneuvers. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready, including window wipers and tire tread depth. If necessary, use snow tires for improved traction. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, food, water, and a flashlight. Increased hazards: Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas tend to freeze more quickly and stay icy longer, so be especially cautious in these areas and be aware of black ice, which can be nearly invisible.
