The National Weather Service says falling temperatures, a chance of showers and some cloud cover should help to move some of the smoke along. "This stagnant, kind of warm pattern, it's going to shift," said meteorologist Shad Keene. "Effects will be less noticeable." According to The Associated Press, the fires are burning in Khakassia, in southeastern Siberia, and were started by farmers burning grass in their fields. Winds pushed the fires out of control and have killed more than a dozen people and burned hundreds of homes, AP reported. Smoke traveled about 5,500 miles and started to drift into the area Saturday, meandering across the sky in Seattle and Vancouver before moving south. The smoke cast the setting sun a deep orange Sunday night in the Rogue Valley. The haze has not affected air quality because of its height off the ground — roughly 13,000 feet, Keene said. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality's Air Quality Index shows air was at "good" levels through Monday afternoon. The high temperature today is expected to be 70 degrees. Chances of rain showers are expected into Thursday, with high temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s. "Temperatures are going to drop significantly. It will be very noticeable," Keene said.
