Election-related letters should not exceed 200 words. Longer guest opinions of up to 600 words will be accepted for ballot measures, but not for candidate races. Miller for parks There is no candidate for the important position of parks commissioner for position 4. The Parks Commission plays a vital role in creating the award-winning and vital park system in Ashland. A very well qualified and motivated candidate has stepped up to the plate. Mathew Miller is an assistant swim coach at Ashland High School and a local business owner who understands financial management . He has an advanced degree in applied mathematics and years of experience in a variety of recreational activities. Mathew's goals for the parks include: expanding recreation opportunities, protecting the park system, and continuing the policy of pesticide reduction in parks. Other goals include support for a second dog park and creating more opportunities to engage youth in healthy activities. I urge you to look at his website, www.millerforparkscommission.com, and remember to write in his name, Mathew Miller, for Parks and Recreation Commission Position 4. Stefani Seffinger, Ashland   Listening to whom? Regarding Congressman Walden's ad in the Oct. 15 Mail Tribune: Ah, the smiling, benevolent face of Greg Walden, assuring us that he is "listening to us in Oregon." Really? Not once to my knowledge in the last six years has he had a open forum in Ashland or visited a food pantry or social service agency. He doesn't want to listen to his constituents who are struggling or those who are helping them because he would hear that he continually votes to hurt them. And what a list — cuts to food stamps, no votes to increase the minimum wage, no help for folks burdened with huge student loan debt, no votes to extending unemployment benefits ... the "no" list for struggling Oregonians goes on and on. Just who are you really listening to? Oh, I think I know ... only the "haves," and those Koch fellow types for sure. Would that he had the conscience and caring of a Jeff Merkley, a man to whom I look forward to giving my vote. Rick Ukena, Ashland   Dotterrer truth-challenged Dotterrer claims that Dr. Bates deserves an "F" for his support of education, citing that Bates, "Voted for significant cuts to education funding (SB 5552 - 2011)." Turns out that SB 5552 passed on a unanimous vote in the Senate: All 14 Republicans and all 16 Democrats voted yes. Looks like Dotterrer deserves an "D-" in truthfulness. Oh, and he forgot to mention that Dr. Bates helped restore over $1 billion to the K-12 budget this year. Patti Lane, Ashland   Semper Fi is not enough Dave Dotterrer is a fine member of the community, but not state Senate material. Despite multiple attempts to engage him and ask respectful questions about his opinions, all he seems to be able to muster is “See my website,” and “Semper Fi!” Voters deserve a senator who will respond to their questions, and has ideas they are willing and able to articulate to the community. Efforts to get him to talk about his opinions of Measure 5, and its effect on the Oregon State Police and education met with silence. Questions about his stance on PERS reform and how he planned to clean up Cover Oregon went unanswered. I don’t doubt that this candidate is a leader and an honorable man. But at this point, it is very clear to me that he is not ready to represent us in Salem. It takes more than silence, evasion and empty promises.
