PUBLIC SAFETY Ashland Fire & Rescue receives sizable FEMA grant to promote home sprinkler use Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 1:17 PM By Local report Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 1:17 PM » Social News The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded Ashland Fire & Rescue a $110,717 grant to promote of home fire sprinkler education. Ashland Fire will use grant funds in cooperation with Medford Fire-Rescue, according to a news release.  The funds will make it possible for the agencies to purchase a fire sprinkler demonstration trailer. Additionally, fire officials will provide fire sprinkler retrofits in at least two adult foster care facilities, technical education and public outreach. One National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) study found that equipping homes with smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system doubles the chance of survival in a fire. In Oregon, nearly 350 people died in home fires from 2004-2013. In a 20-year study in Medford there were 22 fatalities in residential fires.  It is the first such grant specifically for fire prevention and safety, though Ashland Fire & Rescue has received additional FEMA grants in the past.
