Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News The much-discussed reorganization of Oregon's university system, with independent boards of trustees making decisions for each campus instead of the statewide Board of Higher Education, will be complete July 1. In preparation for that transition, the new Southern Oregon University Board of Trustees held its first meeting last week. Unfortunately, one of the new trustees' first acts suggests that nothing has really changed: They voted to increase tuition. Again. Granted, the increase was less than 5 percent which, if approved at the state level, will make SOU the second-least expensive of Oregon's seven campuses. Oregon State University's board has endorsed raising tuition there 7.6 percent. That's the good news. The bad news is, Oregon universities continue to balance their budgets on the backs of students, adding to the struggle to afford a college education and increasing the debt load of students who must borrow to pay for their degrees. The Legislature's proposed budget for the next biennium would allocate $635 million to public universities, up from $521.5 million in 2013-15, but that remains below funding levels of 2007. Other good news for SOU: The three-year retrenchment process that eliminated some faculty positions and ended unpopular majors is apparently working. The trustees were told that all targets have been reached. Enrollment last fall exceeded the target by 2.2 percent, and student retention is the best in more than a decade. SOU is doing its part to reduce costs and increase performance.
