COLLEGE FOOTBALL Dodge rewrites NAIA record books SOU quarterback sets marks for passing yards, TD passes in road win By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 29, 2014 @ 5:27 pm By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 29, 2014 @ 5:27 pm » Social News Southern Oregon University senior quarterback Austin Dodge became the NAIA’s all-time leader in both passing yards and touchdown passes during the Raiders’ 45-24 Frontier Conference victory over Montana State-Northern, Saturday at Havre, Mont. Dodge passed for 417 yards and six touchdowns to bring his career totals to 13,461 passing yards and 121 touchdown passes. The previous records, both established by Old Dominican quarterback Chris Reisert in 2008, were 13,388 passing yards and 120 touchdown passes. Dodge leapfrogged Reisert in passing yards with a 13-yard toss to Ryan Retzlaff midway through the fourth quarter that increased Dodge’s career total to 13,393 yards. Moments later Dodge hit Dylan Young for an 18-yard scoring strike with 7:34 remaining to tie Reisert’s touchdown mark. The record-breaking touchdown pass was a 45-yarder to Sean McShane with 5:29 to go in the game. Dodge received multiple awards Monday for his record-setting performance, earning both NAIA and Frontier Conference offensive player of the week honors. It was his fifth NAIA offensive player of the week award and SOU’s second of the season after running back Melvin Mason earned the same award on Sept. 8. Dodge, who leads the NAIA this season in passing yards (2,099) and passing touchdowns (21), now has six regular season games left to further distance himself from the rest of the NAIA’s all-time great quarterbacks. After this week’s bye, the seventh-ranked Raiders (5-0, 4-0 Frontier Conference) host University of Montana-Western on Oct. 11 in what will be the first football game played on the new synthetic turf at Raider Stadium. After that, the Raiders hit the road for games against No. 5 Carroll and College of Idaho before returning home for a Nov. 1 game against No. 18 Rocky Mountain. Southern Oregon’s last regular season road game is Nov. 8 at Montana Tech and its regular-season finale is the following week against No. 17 Eastern Oregon. After transferring from Central Washington, where he redshirted, Dodge sat on the bench during his first game in a Raiders uniform but played briefly in his second, a 52-0 loss to Portland State on Sept. 3, 2011. He was one of five SOU quarterbacks to see action against the Vikings and completed only 2 of 6 passes for 14 yards and an interception, but SOU head coach Craig Howard, then in his first year, saw enough to put Dodge in the starting lineup the following week at Willamette. Dodge completed 25 of 41 passes for 249 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in his first start, a 31-9 SOU setback, and struggled again the following week against Webber International, but he helped the Raiders spring an upset of Menlo on the road in Week 6 and delivered his first 400-yard passing game seven days later against Eastern Oregon. Huge numbers like that became the norm during Dodge’s sophomore campaign, during which he completed 65 percent of his passes for 5,076 yards and 42 touchdowns while guiding the Raiders to a Frontier Conference co-championship and the NAIA national quarterfinals. Dodge continued his torrid pace as a junior, completing 66 percent of his passes for 4,372 yards and 47 touchdowns, but the Raiders missed the playoffs.
