COLLEGE BASKETBALL Southern Oregon women ranked No. 1, SOU men No. 2 in CCC preseason polls Raider women eye first league title since 2008 By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 10:44 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 10:44 am » Social News The Southern Oregon women's basketball team was voted the league favorite and the SOU men's team was ranked No. 2 in the Cascade Conference preseason coaches' polls. The Southern Oregon women received seven of 10 first-place votes and 95 poll points overall to come in ahead of No. 2 Eastern Oregon (87 points) and No. 3 College of Idaho (75). The poll was released Monday by the league office. The Raiders return eight of their top nine players off a team that finished 25-8 overall and 12-6 in the CCC last season before falling in the league tournament championship game and narrowly missing a berth in the NAIA Division II national championships. Leading scorer Kristen Schoenherr, a junior guard, leading rebounder Carly Meister, a junior forward, and assist-leader Ashley Claussen, a junior guard, are back for an SOU squad that was at its best down the stretch in 2013-14, winning eight of nine before suffering a season-ending loss at Oregon Tech. Eastern Oregon has won two CCC regular-season titles in a row. The Raiders will be gunning for their first since 07-08. The Raiders begin their 2014-15 season Oct. 31 at home against the University of California, Merced. Their league opener is slated for Dec. 5 at Concordia. In the men’s poll, released Tuesday, defending regular-season champion College of Idaho received all 10 first-place votes for a maximum 100 poll points, while SOU picked up 73 poll points and No. 3 Concordia 70. Oregon Tech was voted fourth, Northwest Christian fifth and Northwest sixth. The favored Coyotes finished 28-6 last season and 16-2 in league play and won both the CCC tournament and regular-season championship. They’ll try to repeat with a strong group of returners that includes four seniors - Demetrius Perkins, Sydney Donaldson, Josh Wilson and 7-foot-1 center Joe Vaz. Southern Oregon finished 22-9 and 11-7 in CCC play last season, barely missing a berth to nationals after losing its last three games. The Raiders lost leading rebounder David Sturner, sharpshooter Kyle Tedder and starting point guard Jeff Bush to graduation, but return possibly the best all-around player in the conference in senior power forward Eric Thompson. The 6-foot-9 Thompson averaged 20.3 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3-point land last season. The Raiders also return senior guard/forward Tim Weber, 6-foot-8 center Jordan West and point guard Joel Spear. The SOU men open their 2014-15 campaign Oct. 28 at Humboldt State. SOU’s home opener is Oct. 31 against New Hope Christian College and its Cascade Conference opener is Dec. 5 at Concordia. Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-776-4469 or [email protected].
