But King had another message — one he increasingly expressed toward the end of his life, and the reason he was in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968: economic justice. We are all familiar with his "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered in Washington, D.C., in 1963. But many may not remember that the name of the event he led there was the  March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. King understood that racial justice was inseparable from economic justice, that real equality could not be achieved without equality of opportunity. Less than a week before he died in Memphis — he was there to support striking garbage workers — in a speech at the National Cathedral, King said: "We read one day, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.' But if a man doesn’t have a job or an income, he has neither life nor liberty nor the possibility for the pursuit of happiness. He merely exists." If King were alive today, he would note that the economic recovery has benefited mostly those at the top of the ladder, leaving behind those at the bottom. We, too, should keep that in mind, and not just on Monday.
