The Ashland Chamber’s 4th of July Celebration welcomed thousands while celebrating this year’s theme, “Be Active, Live Healthy.” And to that end, even Ashland Parks and Recreation reports they had more runners this year, up over last year, in their Fourth of July morning run. Grand Marshals Dan Bulkley and Stan Smith, aka “Mr. Raider,” both enjoyed leading the parade down the route. They've served as role models to many citizens and students over decades, showing how a healthy, active lifestyle instills a long life. Ashland welcomed back the jet flyover with two jets that signified the start of the parade and had not occurred the past two years. The festive parade had more than 90 entries from dignitaries to neighborhood entries. Many of the parade entries, having attended the Chamber sponsored workshop, made their entries more sustainable with creative messages and calls to actions that didn’t produce any waste. Congratulations to each parade entry winner of each category. Taking the Grand Prize was the Blue Giraffe Day Spa's “Spatacus” as they epitomized the theme of wellness and living well with themed costumes, a creatively designed float and an impressive presentation along the parade route. Following the parade, Lithia Park filled with happy eventgoers exploring craft, info and food booths and the newly expanded Family Activity Zone. Many enjoyed being at the Lithia Park Bandshell witnessing the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Buzz Frazer and Bob Jackson Miner as Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. The afternoon entertainment included the Ashland City Band and other local musical acts. Thanks to our emcee and host at the bandshell, Livia Genise. The American Band College Star Spangled Spectacular 4th of July concert began at 8 p.m. We appreciate their partnership, as they collected $5 per ticket to contribute to next year’s chamber’s firework display. Concluding the day, from most places in Ashland, you could see the amazing Ashland Chamber’s public firework display that reminds us we are all part of the same wonderful community. Thank you to all the volunteers who help make this event possible. Some volunteers begin their Fourth of July at 4 a.m. and others work until after the fireworks are done. We appreciate their time and efforts. It indeed takes a collective effort from Ashland Police Department, Ashland Fire & Rescue, CERT, city of Ashland Streets, Parks and Recreation and many departments and organizations that play a part in making the day go smoothly.  We thank our sponsors, such as lead sponsor, Asante Physician Partners, who supports the Ashland Chamber 4th of July. From financial support to in-kind contributions, we value the sponsorships from the public and private sectors that help us bring this free, community event to Ashland each year. Keep your eye out for the Ashland Chamber’s thank you ad that will publish in the next few weeks. If you helped make the Fourth of July happen, you will be listed in that thank-you ad as it includes everyone who contributed their time or dollars. Save the date for the Ashland Chamber’s events coming this fall and winter, including: the Children’s Halloween Celebration, Saturday, Oct. 31; the ninth annual Ashland Culinary Festival, Nov. 6–8, produced by the Ashland Chamber’s Visitor & Convention Bureau; and the 23rd annual Festival of Light Celebration, Nov. 27 (the day after Thanksgiving).
