By Staff and wire reports September 05. 2015 12:01AM Running of the Grizz Ashland High senior Justin Robinson (No. 44) celebrates with teammate after returning a fumble for a touchdown against Klamath Union at Walter A. Phillips Field on Friday. (Photo by: Larry Stauth Jr) Shashi Penn returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and Ashland scored 34 points in the first nine minutes on its way to a 61-0 season-opening nonconference win over Klamath Union on Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field. In technically the Grizzlies' first game of the season but really their second after the Pacific Rim Bowl, they wasted no time burying the visiting Pelicans, scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter and nine in the first half to take a 61-0 lead into the break.  Penn's 90-yard kickoff return was only the first big play of the night for the Grizzlies, who also scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Weinberg to Walker Shibley, a 15-yard fumble recovery by Brendon Joss-Bentley off a botched lateral and a 57-yard run by Issac Hyatt. "It shows that we had a game under our belt," Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. "The kids came out with a lot of confidence. For the first unit not to have mistakes, not to have turnovers, I'm pleased with that." In a game that was all but decided midway through the second quarter, the Grizzlies outgained the Pelicans 340 yards to 91, including 221-48 on the ground. Hyatt had six rushes for 85 yards, Mason Dow seven for 65, and Ashland quarterbacks Kyle Weinberg and Tucker Atteberry combined to complete 8 of 15 passes as Ashland leaned on its balanced rushing attack. "We were pretty explosive," Hall said. "I think it shows, and we left a couple big plays on the board. We dropped some passes that could have been some really nice plays. But I thought the quarterbacks played well — they made good decisions. The offensive line I think showed the biggest improvement from the Pacific Rim Bowl to now. I think our protection was better, our run game was better. We had a running game tonight." Ashland also took advantage of Klamath Union's mistakes, recovering two fumbles and hauling in an interception by Jerod Reichert. Shibley led the Ashland receivers with three catches for 51 yards. Women's Volleyball Without its best stuff Friday night at Riehm Arena, the 16th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team had to work a little harder than it would've liked to against an improved Corban squad. Positive finishes in three straight sets allowed the Raiders complete a 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 sweep and stay perfect on the season nonetheless in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams. SOU (8-0 overall) attacked at a season-low average of .124 but bailed itself out with a season-high 11 blocks. Junior middle Niki Small also delivered her best match of the season, assisting on five of those blocks and matching Tyana Andrews with a team-high eight kills. Small attacked only 12 times to get there. The Warriors (2-5) gave themselves a chance to win every set. The first one was tied, 19-19; they were down 19-18 at one point in the second; and SOU ended the match on a 9-5 spurt in the third. "That was a typical first match at home — we just played tight and a little tentative all night and I felt like Corban did a nice job of keeping the ball off the floor," SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing said. Amber Parker led Corban with 14 kills but needed 55 attacks. Madison McLain recorded 26 assists and seven digs, Shelby Miller and Victoria Schroeder had four kills apiece, and Haley Wells picked up 25 digs. The Warriors were done in by an attacking average of .008 that was pulled down by 29 attacking errors. Along with Parker's heavy load, Schroeder attacked at a .000 clip on 28 swings. Emma Gasman was stingy up front for the Raiders with two solo and four assisted blocks, and three others assisted on blocks: Andrews (4), Lauren McGowne (3) and Corynn Kopra (2). Ashlyn Flynn was reliable on the back line with 24 digs and Kopra contributed 19. Laura Morse contributed seven kills, while Kopra and Gasman also had five each. The Raiders have won 25 straight against Corban. They'll be back home at 5 p.m. today to face Northwest Christian (7-1, 0-1), which lost in four sets Friday at Oregon Tech. http://www.dailytidings.com/article/20150905/SPORTS/150909892 © 2015 Copyright © 1995-2011 Crain Communications Inc.
