LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 10 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 11, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Aug. 11, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Songs for summer What should you load into your iPod playlist for a summer evening in Ashland? On top should be The Platters' classic “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” followed by Deep Purple’s classic rock icon, “Smoke on the Water.” Maybe add Burl Ives' version of “On Top of Old Smoky” making a smooth segue into the Sanford Townsend Band’s “Smoke from a Distant Fire.” Toss in something less familiar, like bluesman Johnnie Taylor’s “Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire.” Does anybody else remember Kris Kristofferson’s “Smokey Put the Sweat on Me”? There must be more, but references to cigarette smoking are not relevant here. Enough in the air already. Bruce Borgerson Ashland Cartoon was appalling I find the cartoon by Rogers of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Aug. 4 Voices, totally appalling and inappropriate. It is grotesque to picture the president of the United States in such a horrific manner. I agree with freedom of speech, but let's be respectful of our elected leader. Maybe you don't agree with his politics, but to disgrace our president in that manner is far beyond the bounds of decency. Pam Dehnke Ashland Better than weeds I'm not sure yet how I feel about the artificial turf in the median near Omar's Restaurant, but I do feel the weed patch in the median by Ashland High School is pretty unattractive. It appears to me that at least for the time being there are less weeds in the artificial stuff. T. C. McCartney Ashland Pro-life killers   It seems to me the 17 anti-science Republican contenders for president are actually vying to demonstrate who is most vile … most willing to kill for profit and position. Their hit list includes: Iran, Healthcare, education, Medicare, and Social Security, not to mention the tired, the hungry, the poor, and women in general. They obviously worship war & guns above all else. To a person they genuflect before the Fossil Fuel Industry’s powerful billions and deny climate change and global warming engendered by those same industries. As they campaign it is as though “I am not a scientist” worms are slithering alongside “I don’t listen to scientists” snakes. How can they ignore the fact that our world is getting hotter? Don’t they know that the oceans are acidifying and warming, fish and trees are dying, glaciers are melting, wildfires are increasing, and critical water supplies are disappearing as drought and deluge become more common? If we place the livability of our planet in their hands, it will assuredly be unlivable within decades. It is clear that their focus is on profit and power. They don’t really care about life at all. Their hypocrisy echoes clearly in the oxymoron: “pro-life killers”. Lee Lull Talent Combat modern slavery On July 27, Secretary of State John Kerry released the 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report, which ranks 188 countries on their efforts to combat human trafficking, including the United States. The TIP report is the world’s “gold standard” for information on the global crime of modern day slavery. The report shows a desperate need for more international assistance to free children, women and men from enslavement and to prosecute and punish those who exploited and abused them. There is a bipartisan initiative in Congress that would provide increased U.S. foreign aid through a public-private partnership, the End Modern Slavery Initiative. The fund will receive funds from other government donors, as well. I strongly encourage the community to read the End Modern Slavery Initiative.
