LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Nov. 3 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 3, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 3, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Campaign ads insulting I'm appalled at the negative, deceitful campaign run by Col. Dave Dotterrer in his bid to unseat incumbent Dr. Alan Bates in the Oregon Senate. Dotterrer's mailers have consistently shown he will greatly exaggerate, twist and hide the truth, rather than constructively educating the public on how he would do things differently. His "Willie Horton" and education-related mailers were particularly absurd and insulting, given the obvious facts he omits. Dotterer ought to be embarrassed and ashamed of his campaign. I expected more from a Marine. John Williams, Ashland Vote no on 15-128 "Free Library Cards for All." Remember that catchy slogan on the lawn signs around town last election? It convinced a lot of people to vote for the library tax. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop, and now it has. I have received my property tax bill. Guess what: It is costing me $307 so there are "Free Library Cards for All."  Why can't adults using the library pay a user's fee? It wouldn't take much: $5 to $10 a year, about what they might spend on two lattes or a pack of cigarettes. Thirty people paying $10 each would allow me the freedom to choose how to spend my $300! Now the transportation district wants money so buses can run extended hours. Guess what that will cost me? Another $300 a year. Is it really too much to ask 300 of the people actually riding the bus to pay $1 more a year for bus tickets? When you vote, please remember there is no such thing as a free lunch, free library cards or a free ride. Somewhere, someone is paying the bills, and believe me, it's not free. Vote no on 15-128. Diane Mueller, Ashland Why fight labeling? Every citizen should question why Monsanto and friends are pouring tens of millions of dollars into anti-labeling campaigns. If GMOs are so safe, why is there such an effort to prohibit their labeling? We have a fundamental right to know what we and our families are eating. Monsanto believes money talks. Don't let it drown out your voice. Vote yes on 92. Eileen Chieco, Ashland Vote yes on 92 It seems to me that all the smoke and mirrors coming out on Measure 92 is directed at the issues of whether GMOs are good or bad for you. However, isn't this about just labeling a food product to let me know if it has been altered with genetically modified organisms? Similar to letting me know if it had trans-fats or salt. I urge you to vote yes on Measure 92 so I can be an informed consumer and let me make the decision if GMOs are good for me. Bill Philp, Jacksonville Quiz for Obama-haters For reasons I'm struggling to understand, it seems that there are a lot of people who disapprove of the job President Obama has done (or just plain dislike him, for other reasons). If you fall into this camp, here's a "multiple choice quiz" to help you identify exactly why the president is someone that deserves America's disapproval: a) Because the President has pulled the country out of the deep recession he inherited when he took office. b) Because under his administration Osama bin Laden was located and prevented from further action. c) Because the jobless rate has fallen greatly in the six years of his administration (10 million added jobs). d) Because he has carried through on his promise to get American troops out of Iraq and then Afghanistan. e) Because he rescued the American auto industry, and all the ancillary auto-related businesses nationwide. f) Because, through the Affordable Care Act, he added at least 30 million Americans to those with health insurance, many for the first time. g) Because under his administration the federal deficit has been reduced by two-thirds. h) Because his administration pushed through major reforms of Wall Street practices that had crashed the economy, along with creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I'm running out of letters before including all of the (to me, admirable) actions President Obama has taken. The above list should suffice to help you focus on the accomplishment that you most disapprove of.
