Letters to the editor: Tuesday, May 12 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Not the first church  A few minor corrections to the story about the Orthodox Church:  The “the first-ever Orthodox Christian church in Southern Oregon” could be misconstrued to mean that our parish is the first (or only) Orthodox group to exist in Southern Oregon. We make no such claim, and that is not the point — but rather that this temple would be the first full-scale and permanent Orthodox Church south of Eugene. There is a Russian Orthodox community in Rogue River, and a Greek Orthodox mission in Roseburg. Even though we have 150 people on the parish roster, we are rarely more than 70-90 people at our Sunday service. The sentence: “with a spherical dome in the Orthodox style, not the Russian style with onion domes” should read: “with a spherical dome in the Byzantine/Balkan style, rather than the Russian style with onion domes.” The parish has not applied for a cemetery, and it has therefore not yet been approved by the county. Father Andreas Blom  Talent   Help defend GMO ban  We (Jackson County) have been sued by two GMO alfalfa growers, backed by agrichemical companies, for over $4 million in damages. This is not a labeling issue — it is to ban the growing of GMO crops such as sugar beets, corn, potatoes, apples, zucchini, and others coming down the pike, from our county. The case is scheduled to be heard in federal court in Medford on May 20. Our Family Farms Coalition is raising funds for the defense through fundraisers and a Kickstarter campaign. Don't forget Jackson County won the election, in May 2014, Family Farms Measure 15-119, with 66 percent of the vote, in a largely conservative county. Our Family Farms Coalition, along with Center for Food Safety, Oshala Farm and farmer Chris Hardy, have joined the county as defendants, and so are actively working to raise funds to support the legal team that is vigorously defending our victory. Our Family Farms Coalition has already raised more than half of the $100,000 needed and are hoping the online Kickstarter campaign will get them across the finish line. As of now, pledges total just over $13,000, with $33,000 as the goal. Please check it out — I bet you'll find a Kickstarter reward that motivates you to donate (or, decline a reward and just make a donation). You can also donate at the Ashland and Medford food co-ops at any cash register. You can find out more about Our Family Farms Coalition at their website, and learn much more about the bigger issues related to GMOs on their Facebook page. Fellow residents of Jackson County, is there anything more important than food safety?
