American Water Resources said it was going to send mailers to all Ashland residents, the release said, informing them of the company's service to check resident water lines running from their home to the city’s main water line. Concerns over lead contamination in the wake of revelations about high levels in Flint, Mich., after that city switched water sources to a more corrosive source and failed to add water conditioners that would prevent leaching of lead from old water pipes. That's not a concern in Ashland, a city official said recently. The most recent tests, in August 2014, showed levels at 1.3 parts per billion, far below the 15 ppb it takes before remediating action becomes mandatory. City water tests are taken from taps inside homes to ensure it's safe. Furthermore, Ashland's water is not acidic, like in Flint, according to Mike Morrison, city public works superintendent, and is treated with soda ash to make sure the level of acidity remains low. "We've never had reason to consider lead to be an issue here," Morrison said. Maintaining your water and sewer lines is always a good idea, the city's new release said, but the city does not require that you do so.
