A new act for an old building ... OUR VIEW Our View: A small price to pay Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jul. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News While it is indeed a sad commentary on the state of our world, the decision by a local Jewish temple to install a video camera as a security measure does not strike us as overly intrusive, but rather as a practical step. In the wake of the horrific attack at a black church in Charleston, S.C., Havurah Shir Hadash in Ashland installed security cameras at its entrances and a panic button to alert police. One temple member objected publicly and others no doubt have concerns about the step. We live, after all, in a society in which we can be videotaped almost anytime we step outside our own doors — by governments, by merchants, by people with smartphones and now, while attending our houses of worship. But we also live in a time of terrorism, some state-sponsored, some from delusional individuals. Fueled by political, ethnic and religious hatred — and aided in this country by easy access to guns — acts of violence are being directed at people and private institutions and not just governments. Like the black churches, temples have added reason to be concerned, as the Jewish faith has been linked to the Jewish state, which remains a flash point in the Middle East. Security cameras and panic buttons will not stop someone from entering a building and opening fire. But it will give police information that could save lives, both then and later. The minimal loss of privacy in return seems a small price to pay.   DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jul. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
