Austin Dodge threw three touchdown passes in the second half and the SOU defense pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter as the Raiders overcame an early deficit for the third week in a row on their way to a 56-28 Frontier Conference victory over College of Idaho on Saturday at Walter A. Phillips Field. Dodge completed 30 of 42 passes for 476 yards and five touchdowns and Sean McShane had eight catches for 118 yards in his first start since injuring his left knee in the first game of the 2013 season, powering the Raiders to a 4-0 start to their season, including 3-0 in the Frontier. College of Idaho quarterback Teejay Gordon passed for 200 yards and rushed for 163, including an 82-yard keeper early in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to keep the Coyotes (2-1, 1-1) in the ranks of unbeatens. After the C of I's Zach Garzoli scored on a 12-yard run to knot the score at 28, the Raiders came right back with a 74-yard touchdown drive which kicked off a 28-0 game-ending sprint for SOU. Keegan Lawrence ran in the first of those four TDs from the 8, and Dodge connected with Dylan Young to make it 42-28 early in the fourth. Lawrence's 50-yard run made it 49-28 and Daniel Abernethy scooped a fumble and rumbled 43 yards to cap the scoring with 26 seconds to go. Southern Oregon's defense also came up huge, pulling off a goal-line stand early in the fourth. SOU's Melvin Mason rushed for 90 yards and Lawrence 58. SOU's Daniel Breaux had two sacks, and Young seven catches for 101 yards. For C of I, Marcus Lenhardt had eight catches for 139 yards. Boys Water Polo ASHLAND SPLITS: At Roseville, Calif., Whitney downed Ashland, 9-8, and San Marin topped the Grizzlies, 9-5, at the 12-school California Capital Challenge. Against Whitney, Ashland’s Luke Abel and Tristan Gavin each recorded three goals and goalkeeper Vincent Wright made seven blocks. Against San Marin, Devin Lancaster had two goals and four steals and Gavin added two goals and three steals for the Grizzlies (2-3). Ashland beat Whitney, 17-2, and fell to CK McClatchy, 10-8, on Friday. Girls Soccer While it’s defense kept Hidden Valley at bay, the Ashland girls soccer team put on an offensive barrage in the first half of its nonleague contest Saturday. Samantha Lilley and Faci Graham both scored twice for Ashland, which tallied all of its goals in the first half of a 5-0 victory at North Mountain Park. “We had good defense, good team play again and we’re happy with the way we’re developing,” said Ashland coach Eric Wolff. The Grizzlies’ scoring began and ended with Lilley, who connected in the 10th and 38th minutes, both on assists from Maddie Hunkele. Faci Graham scored in the 12th off of a steal and again in the 25th on a penalty kick for the Grizzlies (4-1-1). Lilli Patton also scored on a cross from Ia Balbuena in the 22nd minute. Ashland goalkeeper Sydney Norvell needed to make just one save as the defense bogged down Hidden Valley's attack. Boys Soccer At Murphy, Graycen Kennedy chipped in a goal after collecting the ball off a deflected direct kick by teammate David Lehrburg to cement Ashland’s 2-0 nonconference win over host Hidden Valley. Bryce Rollins got the Grizzlies (2-3) rolling after turning a steal into a score in the 36th minute. Recording the shutout for the Grizzlies was goalkeeper Tejas Leier-Heyden, who had six saves. The Mustangs’ keeper Seth Trader made a pair of impressive one-on-one stops against both Rollins and Kennedy.
