Facie Graham scored twice and added an assist, Jessica Harrower scored two goals and the Grizzlies struck early in each half en route to a 6-0 Midwestern League victory over Eagle Point at North Mountain Park. With the win, Ashland (9-3-1, 3-2 MWL) stayed in fourth place in the conference standings and will have an opportunity to leapfrog as many as two teams in its regular-season finale Saturday at home against Springfield. Eagle Point fell to 3-8-2, 0-4-1 in the MWL. Maya Timmons scored less than two minutes into the game to give the Grizzlies the early advantage, and Harrower connected in the 12th to help them pull away. Timmons took advantage of a nice assist from Graham to net the first goal from the top of the box, hammering it under the keeper’s legs. Harrower’s first goal was beauty, a perfectly-placed shot from the corner of the penalty box that curled just inside the far post. “It’s nice to be able to get that goal quickly and be able to focus on the game and not worry about having to score,” Ashland coach Eric Wolff said. Ashland also received two assists from Samantha Lilley. The Grizzlies had won six games in a row prior to suffering back-to-back road losses to league-leading Churchill (8-2-2, 4-0) and Marist (4-6-2, 2-2-1). But Ashland on Tuesday bounced back by leaning on a prolific offense that’s netted 50 goals, more than any other MWL team. “When we’ve played well, we’ve been great,” Wolff said. “But when we’re not, we’re not.” The Grizzlies definitely were on Tuesday, pulverizing the Eagles once again. Ashland beat Eagle Point 2-0 in the previous head-to-head matchup, a nonleague affair Sept. 30 at Eagle Point. But the Eagles took more chances on Tuesday and paid the price. “This time, they tried to play a little more open and tried to create more opportunities,” Wolff said. “But my girls did a good job. They were able to control the ball really well all over the field, and we created lots of opportunities.” Boys Soccer At Eagle Point, Ashland climbed out of a 1-0 hole to beat Eagle Point 2-1 on Tuesday and can clinch the Midwestern League championship with a victory at home over Springfield on Saturday. Eagle Point (8-4-1, 2-3) scored first in the 60th minute, but Ashland (8-4, 4-1 MWL) responded a minute later when David “Lethal” Lee delivered a perfect cross over the keeper’s head to a streaking Lucas Golding, who one-touched the ball into the back of the net. Ashland took the lead in overtime in spectacular fashion when David Lehrburger booted a quick-reset free kick from midfield into the box, where freshman Ben Lucero headed the ball over Eagle Point’s keeper. “Every player contributed to this game and our seniors took absolute leadership and kept the group passionate about the play,” Ashland coach Brad Roupp said. If Ashland beats Springfield on Saturday it will clinch no worse than a tie with Marist for first place in the MWL, and since the Grizzlies won the head-to-head matchup 2-1 over the Spartans it’s Ashland that would pocket the league’s No. 1 seed to state. “We started (the season) 0-3, we were struggling to find ourselves after losing key seniors to graduation and the boys have stepped up,” Roupp said. “We’ve got new leaders on the field and we certainly have a lot of fight in us now. The players have bought 100 percent into our program and it’s just a joy to coach.” Prep Volleyball At Central Point, Ashland got off to a strong start and challenged one of the best teams in the state on its home floor, but Crater prevailed in a Midwestern League rivalry match Tuesday, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 at Crater High School. The win clinched for the Comets 16-2, 10-1 MWL) no worse than a tie for the MWL championship, while Ashland (15-7, 8-3) fell to third place with one league match remaining Friday at home against Churchill. Jordan Tilley had 28 assists, Hope Baldrica 10 blocks and eight kills, Myla Norvell 21 digs and two aces and Grace Lenthe seven kills and two blocks to lead the Grizzlies.
