The senior forward scored the first 11 points of the game and drained three 3-pointers, and Malik Pippa added 11 points as Ashland 10-11, 4-7 Midwestern League) snapped a five-game losing streak and clinched a Class 5A play-in game. “(The playoffs) weren’t really on our mind,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. “We were focused on taking care of business tonight. They were hungry to get a win. The defense wasn’t what I wanted it to be, but on nights like this sometimes the offense carries you.” Especially Malcom’s offense. The 6-foot-5 standout outscored North Eugene (2-21, 1-10) all by himself in the first quarter in helping Ashland take a 23-6 lead. The Highlanders managed to cut the lead to 10 points heading into the fourth quarter, but there Ashland pulled away with one of its finest offensive finishes of the season. “(Malcolm) was ultra-aggressive tonight and did things the right way,” Gregg said. “It also helps when you make shots.” The win was Ashland’s first since Jan. 21 against Eagle Point. Now the Grizzlies will have a chance to take a two-game win streak into the postseason Tuesday at Eagle Point. The difference on Friday, Gregg said, was the Grizzlies’ confidence. “They were patient and they trusted each other,” he said. “We’re getting to the point where I’m begging them to trust each other and trust the system and they’re starting to.” Gregg was quick to add that the Grizzlies still have a ways to go. “It’s a step in the right direction,” he said. “We’re not where we need to be at but we’re getting closer. JV result – Ashland won. Girls Basketball At Eugene, in a battle of two struggling teams it was North Eugene that snapped its longest losing streak of the season Friday against Ashland. Sophomore guard Kelly O’Malley scored 15 points and the Challengers held the Grizzlies to 13 points in the middle two quarters en route to a 50-37 Midwestern League victory at North Eugene High School. “If you look at our scorebook, we always have one or two bad quarters and that’s the difference in all of our games,” Ashland coach Ashley Hafner said. Michaela Dunn scored 10 points and Georgia Williams eight to pace Ashland, but the Grizzlies suffered their ninth loss in a row to fall to 7-14 overall and 0-11 in the MWL. The setback also officially knocked the Grizzlies out of playoff contention. North Eugene improved to 13-10 and 5-6. Ashland hurt itself at the free throw line, where it hit just 1 of 7 attempts, and couldn’t keep pace with the Highlanders after a competitive opening quarter. Now, the Grizzlies have one more chance to avoid going winless in their first-ever season as a member of the Midwestern. Ashland will face Eagle Point in Eagle Point on Tuesday. “We’ve got eight seniors on our team that have played basketball together their entire lives, for the most part,” Hafner said. “This season has been really tough on them. There are only so many life lessons you can teach after losses. I’m running out of things to say. It’s really for them.
