Look at every privately owned parking lot, every vacant lot, every gas station (or converted gas station), every “underutilized” lot and picture a 55-foot building going up. This will not happen overnight. It may take a decade, but it will happen. By approving the revised ordinance City Council has plotted a course that over the coming years will significantly change the city's appearance and atmosphere. Let's not kid ourselves; increasing the building height is not about infill. It's about gentrification. There's a difference. Ashland is already an attractive place for developers. They will build here under the existing laws and do not need the further incentive of a 55-foot building. There is no pressing need for taller structures. Make no mistake, the condominiums that grace the upper stories of these new buildings will not be for middle-class people. Is this what the citizens of Ashland want? Roy Laird, Ashland Governor should resist LNG I'm a fourth generation Oregonian whose children and grandchildren were born not far from the Rogue River. I'm writing on behalf of my family and that beloved river. By halting the proposed Jordan Cove Liquefied Natural Gas Pipeline, Oregon can lead the way away from environmental degradation and toward true environmental protection. I respectfully suggest that Governor Kitzhaber sit beside and listen awhile to any one of the several rivers that would be directly impacted by the pipeline before coming to a decision about the matter. He should be courageous in resisting pressure from the gas companies to impose the expansion of their reach. As Oregon's chief executive, I hope he uses his position to help stop the pipeline's destructive path through our beautiful state and beyond. The push for pipeline construction can be met and stopped when enough Oregonians understand what is at stake: the well-being of the land, the water and the air that sustain us. I appeal to the governor's  affection for Oregon's lands and waterways. I thank him for his efforts on behalf of the power of limitation — a renewable, sustainable, and as yet largely unexplored resource available to us all. Stacie Smith, Medford Consider social work Thanks for the interesting article about Angela Fleischer, SOU’s Assistant director of student support and Intervention. Ms. Fleischer's testimony about the collaboration between SOU and the Ashland Police Department on the handling of sexual assault reports on campus occurred on Dec. 9 before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism. Her testimony, which is quite impressive, is available for viewing on http://www.c-span.org/video/?323149-1/hearing-sexual-assault-college-campuses. This collaborative model for handling sexual assault reports on college campuses is now a national model. As a social work educator, I want our community to know that Angela is a social worker and her work with the APD is a great example of what social workers do: they serve the needs of individuals while at the same time positively influencing systems which affect those individuals. This is what the profession of social work is all about. If you want to be a part of this profession, consider joining Portland State University’s School of Social Work MSW-Distance Option in Ashland. A new cohort begins in the fall of 2015.
