The proposed increase is certainly dramatic, but there is a sound reason for bringing the fines up to date. A ticket for parking too long in a given spot in Ashland is $11. That compares with $25 in Medford and similar amounts in Phoenix and Talent. Critics have already weighed in, saying Ashland shouldn't just charge what everyone else charges, and warning that tourists won't like it. Certainly "everyone else is doing it" is, by itself, an insufficient reason to change. And Ashland's parking problems stretch beyond the fines charged for tickets. Parking downtown can be difficult any time, but especially in the summer. Additional parking is sorely needed, but space is at a premium. All the more reason to make sure people observe time limits. Anyone who has parked in Portland or any other large city knows it's easy to spend $11 a day or more to park. Many might consider an $11 ticket a small price to pay for a convenient parking spot. At $26, it's more likely people would be careful not to stay past the time limit. Also under consideration is doubling the $1 fee for parking in the Hargadine parking structure. Even at $2, that's a bargain. As for the tourists, they're likely to applaud the change if it means parking spaces turn over more frequently.
