We love candy, and wine; we love our pets, our yard, our children, our mates, and who knows what else. We’re inundated with movies, books, and music that speak of eternal love, love lost, an unrequited love. Because of this obsession, most of the women of my generation were brought up waiting for their Prince Charming — the rescuer and star of popular myths. And once he professed his true love, the lucky girl was guaranteed to live a happy, fulfilled life. I certainly believed it! I thought I was going to be swept off my feet and whisked away to the land of eternal romance … but the only “sweeping” I got was when I swept the front porch. In recent years, we exchanged the prince for the pursuit of the “soul mate,” the one who will be our perfect match and make us feel that now at last we’re complete. Once again, though, this is leaving us in the victim position; unless we can find our other half, we can’t be whole. At this stage in my life, I realize that partners should be mates that join us to combine their strengths, talents, and values with ours so that we can lead a wonderful life together. However, if these individuals don’t show up, we can still be complete without them. We don’t need them to survive and thrive — they’re merely the icing on the cake. I’ve felt the passion of love and experienced firsthand the resulting chaos it can leave in its wake. If love segues into something more lasting and fulfilling, then you’re indeed fortunate. Because falling in love with someone does not always serve our best interests. Sometimes you’ve chosen someone who is analogous to a vampire leaving your spirit withered and dry! You need affection in order to flourish and thrive and stay fully alive. Nothing feeds the mind, body, and soul like loving and being loved, however there are different types of love, and the most important thing to understand is which kind replenishes you and which depletes you. I’ve experienced both. Deep, meaningful love is being able to give to another without losing your essential self. For many people, it’s a line that’s very difficult to see. It’s imperative to express affection and feel cherished as you get older. You can focus your love on a partner, family members, pets, friends, or perhaps individuals you support through volunteer work. People who age brilliantly have discovered how important this facet of their life is, but if you’ve felt that you didn’t get the love you needed in the past or don’t have it now, there’s still hope.
