It's part of a new orientation program to help incoming students learn about the Ashland community even as they settle in on campus. Jadon Berry, SOU’s coordinator for new student orientation and student success, said he's excited to introduce students to Ashland through SOU Loves Ashland. “SOU Loves Ashland is a program that’s designed to help students feel more at home and more connected with the greater community,” Berry said. “Through orientation, we typically do programs that really connect students with the campus and the resources on campus. But some of us on the planning team also had this sense that we could do a better job with getting our students connected with the rest of the community earlier in their time here rather than letting it kind of happen naturally.”  The effort is part of a Week of Welcome, running through Sunday. The week is the third step in a four-step approach that SOU has adopted this year for orientation for new students. Step one was initiated in May with prospective students getting a look at the school through preview days. The second step helped students sign up for classes in August during Raider Orientation and Registration (ROAR). The final step will provide extended orientation programs after classes start on Monday. SOU Loves Ashland begins at 10 a.m. today on the SOU Raider Village Courtyard outside of the dining hall. Students and coordinators will walk from there to the band shell at Lithia Park, just over 1½ miles from the school. Coordinators chose not to bus participants as a way to show students how close downtown Ashland is to SOU. Students will be welcomed at Lithia Park by Mayor John Stromberg, SOU’s President Roy Saigo and four of Ashland’s City Council members. After the opening greetings, SOU catering will host a barbecue for students. Music will be provided by a DJ sponsored by Creekside Pizza and live music from a local Ashland band, 100 Watt Mind. In the afternoon, students will be given a passport and asked to collect stickers from 10 businesses in Ashland. “We had 85 businesses sign up to get their name on the passport, which is a pretty awesome turnout for a brand new event,” Berry said. “I don’t think we had anybody say 'no' who we approached directly.” Berry said that coordinators broke downtown Ashland into four zones, with students needing to visit at least two businesses per zone in order to collect the 10 stickers needed on their passport. This motive was to help students see and experience participating businesses not located on Main Street or in other busy sections of downtown Ashland. “There might be something in a nook or side street that they would really love to patronize, but they wouldn’t necessarily notice right away,” Berry said. Students will return the completed passports to the band shell in Lithia Park, where they'll be entered in a drawing for gift certificates, lift tickets donated by Mt. Ashland Ski Area and the chance to win an iPad. Andrew Ensslin, a graduate student in the master's of arts teaching program at SOU, has worked alongside Berry for a few years and has spent this summer helping him plan the event. “SOU Loves Ashland will allow our new students to explore what our city has to offer them,” Ensslin said. “We want this event to show our new students that they have picked a great place to call home for the next few years.” Shannon Hawkins is a freelance reporter and SOU student.
