Exercise garden ceremony The groundbreaking for a garden of doggy delights is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road. The Memorial and Exercise garden, for which fund-raising is now under way, will be a parklike setting with trees and plants where potential adopters can get better acquainted with the dog they'd like to take home. The exercise garden will also include an agility course for shelter workers to give dogs exercise while they await new homes. Also part of the area will be an area with memorial bricks honoring pets, family members and other loved ones. Bricks are available for purchase now from the society; cost is $35 or $50, depending on size and lettering. The 105-by-115-foot area is planned on property the Humane Society already owns on Table Rock Road, said Kathy Pilolla, SOHS director of communications and development. The land became available when the society moved its new building to the property and other smaller buildings were torn down. The garden's cost is between $25,000 and $30,000, she said; a donor has given $11,000. The Memorial and Exercise Garden will be completed in stages, she said, and is designed to be portable in case the shelter moves to a larger location.
