Commercial boats get to set their pots three days ahead of Monday traditional Dec. 1 opening after Dungeness sampling last week showed crab meat levels have exceeded preseason criteria, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Crews will start pulling pots at 9 a.m., with the first Dungeness likely showing up in the Rogue Valley later that week. The recreation season is open year-round in Oregon bays and estuaries, which are popular destinations for boat crabbers. Dock crabbers flock to places like Bandon and Charleston to ply bay waters. The ocean can be very good for recreational crabbers, particularly when storm events fill estuaries with freshwater that pushes Dungeness out to sea. Tenmile Lakes advisory lifted Tenmile Lakes is back on bass anglers' radar screens now that a more than two month long blue-green algae advisory has been lifted. The Oregon Health Authority's lifting Tuesday of the voluntary advisory against water contact at the coastal lake means Oregon is now free of such advisories. Tenmile Lakes is between Coos Bay and Reedsport along Highway 101 and a popular lake not only for bass fishing but also fall trolling for coho salmon that move from the ocean into Tenmile Lakes via Tenmile Creek. The two lakes are connected by a canal. The voluntary advisory at Tenmile was put in place Sept. 15. But that doesn't mean the blue-green algae season is over for Oregon. Lost Creek Lake often gets a fall bloom that at times lasts into January. Justin Stegall, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' natural-resource specialist at Lost Creek Lake, says the lake developed a spate of algae in late October, but tests confirmed blue-green algae levels under the threshold for an advisory against water contact. Stegall says the Corps continues its visual monitoring for algae and the agency will test the water again should a bloom appear. Applications for youth hunt due Sunday  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking applications through 5 p.m. Sunday for one of 16 guided hunting trips offered to young guns on one of Southern Oregon's best private ranches.  As of late Tuesday, only 15 applications for a guided hunt at the C2 Cattle Company ranch off Highway 140 have reached biologist Vince Oredson's desk at the Denman Wildlife Area in White City. "That's OK," Oredson says. "I hate to turn anybody away. If I get 16 applications and everybody gets in, that's fine with me." To be eligible, kids younger than 18 must have drawn the 630T Rogue Unit Youth Deer controlled-hunt tag in last summer's drawing. The hunt period for that tag is Dec. 15 through Jan. 5 and is meant to coincide with the Christmas vacation from school.  The youth hunts on C2 will be one-day affairs for either a buck or doe deer, and the ranch will provide a guide.
