With each major mass murder, more guns are bought. Assault weapons with 30-bullet capacity magazines seem to be the weapon of choice for mass murderers. I suggest we limit all rifles and assault weapons to a five-shot magazine. It would be a felony for anyone except law enforcement to possess a rifle magazine with more than a five-shot capacity; with one bullet in chamber, that would make six. Handguns with more than a six-shot capacity would require a special license and extensive background check. There has been enough murder. Hugging your kids and and giving them a kiss as they go off to school and wondering if they will be alive at the end of the day is something that we can no longer tolerate. The NRA will not be happy until we revert to the "Old West" days of every man — and now woman — having to strap on a gun before heading outside their home. It's time we stand up to the NRA and stop the holocaust. Mike E. Miles Medford Gun violence The terrible murders in Roseburg are another tragic example of the gun culture in our country. Each of these devastating events is usually followed by typical comments in the news and by politicians. We need more gun control laws. The NRA is nothing but a lobby for gun manufacturers. The NRA is the only organization that I am aware of that teaches the proper and safe handling of firearms and safe storage of firearms. This fact is never mentioned. The NRA magazine publishes numerous true accounts of individuals who have protected their home with a firearm. These incidents are never reported in any news outlet. The entertainment industry is the indirect promoter of gun violence. Movies, television and video games are filled with gun violence of the worst kind. The entertainment industry is a bastion of liberalism and donates to the Democrats. The NRA is a conservative organization that donates to Republicans. So, naturally the NRA is the villain and the entertainment industry is given a pass. C.A. Beck Central Point And still it operates Thank you for the front page article on Sept. 29. It sends chills up my spine to realize that it took a crack corps of consummate professionals in our county government only 14 years to figure out that Mountain View Paving, the asphalt plant in Talent, is unlawful. Hopefully it won't take the county that long to force its relocation. Richard Keleshian Talent Pipe water instead Instead of building potentially catastrophic LNG and oil pipelines for the benefit of big business, foreign entities and politicians in the pockets of lobbyists, perhaps we should build pipelines for a more precious resource — water — from areas of devastating abundance (see current events in South Carolina and most of the Eastern seaboard) and transported to replenish the aquifers and farming resources of California, Oregon and other areas of drought. Michael Emmens Medford Asphalt still cooking Apparently residents of Mountain View Estates do not have the same rights as the asphalt plant, which is directly behind our home. It has been reported that he has been denied his permit to make asphalt and a $200-a-day fine may be levied. So far week he has been cooking asphalt almost every single day. Why does he have right to continue an illegal operation without any real consequences?
