NO. 4 OHIO STATE WHAT : National Championship WHEN : Monday, Jan. 12, 5:30 p.m. WHERE : Arlington, Texas TV : ESPN » Social News EUGENE — Celebrate with his teammates. That’s what Tony Washington did Thursday night after earning Rose Bowl defensive player of the game honors during Oregon’s 59-20 victory over Florida State in the College Football Playoff semifinal. The fifth-year senior outside linebacker brought Jameis Winston down on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line in the first quarter and returned a fumble by the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner for a 58-yard touchdown in the decisive third quarter. Three months earlier, Washington was called for a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after celebrating his sack of Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon. The Wildcats punched in the winning touchdown moments later to stun Oregon 31-24 at Autzen Stadium. Mark Helfrich had to remind the Ducks that football is a team game to be celebrated together. Since the Oct. 2 loss, Oregon’s defense, which forced five Florida State turnovers in the second half that led to 34 points, has been getting stronger seemingly every week. “It’s incredible,” Washington said after Oregon advanced to the national championship game with a 39-point win over a Seminoles team that had won 29 consecutive games. “Growing up in Southern California, the Rose Bowl has always been a big game to me. So just being able to play in it, and just keep winning with my teammates, there’s no feeling like it. “It’s a really special game, a really special moment for all of us, and I’m just trying to cherish it.” Oregon’s dominant offense, led by Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, received most of the attention leading into the Rose Bowl. But Don Pellum’s unit, which smothered Arizona in the Pac-12 championship rematch, had its fingerprints all over the Leishman Trophy. Senior linebacker Derrick Malone forced and recovered a fumble to start the Ducks’ 41-7 blitz after the intermission. “We’ve always been in the shadows and we’re finally stepping out. We’re starting to get recognized for what we do,” said Malone, who has been playing through a painful shoulder injury most of the season. “We have an elite defense, as well as an elite offense, but we have more work to do.” Oregon will face Ohio State in the national championship on Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Buckeyes upset Alabama 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl with their third starting quarterback, Cardale Jones. Despite losing all-American cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu to a knee injury before the Rose Bowl, John Neal’s secondary shined on the big stage. Starting cornerback Troy Hill and safety Reggie Daniels led the team with nine tackles each. Hill had a tackle for loss during a red-zone stand, and Daniels recovered a fumble that was forced by safety Erick Dargan. “I knew the spotlight was going to be on me and the spotlight was going to be on our secondary with our leader out,” said Hill, who helped limit standout Florida State wide receiver Rashad Greene to 59 receiving yards. “We all took it as a personal challenge, not just myself.” Redshirt freshman Chris Seisay started in place of Ekpre-Olomu, who had played in Oregon’s previous Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin three years ago. “Ifo became Ifo when he was a freshman in the Rose Bowl. Same thing with Seisay, he’s an extraordinary player,” Malone said. “He had his head on in practice, and that’s why I’m not surprised with what he did on the field. … Like I told (Ekpre-Olomu) before the game, ‘This is all for you. I know how much you want to be out here.’ “His leadership is what got us here, honestly.” The secondary had the top four tacklers against Florida State. Dargan finished with eight tackles, and Seisay added six. “We believe in each other,” said Dargan, who also intercepted Winston. “Everybody wants to make plays and play for each other. We’re just having fun.” Malone finished with five tackles in addition to the forced and recovered fumble. Defensive end DeForest Buckner was also on the list of defensive player of the game candidates with four tackles, including one for loss, and a pass break up. Washington deserved to take a bow this time with four tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and the back-breaking touchdown. “We really imposed our will,” said defensive lineman Christian French, who had two tackles and also converted a two-point conversion after Oregon’s first touchdown. “It’s just amazing to see what this team can do. We just keep on getting better and better every game. “I’m excited to see where we’re going to go and what we’re going to do in the national championship.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 4, 2015 @ 5:43 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Vegas Odds, Top Fantasy Picks for Saturday Divisional Games Jan. 10, 2015 at 9:00 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Sunday Jan. 10, 2015 at 6:48 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Saturday Jan. 9, 2015 at 6:23 am Best FanDuel, DraftKings 2015 Divisional Lineup Advice Jan. 8, 2015 at 7:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Panthers vs. Seahawks Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Colts vs. Broncos Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
