They don't call them "dopes" for no reason! Tracy Van Hee, Eagle Point Phoenix food pantry shows town's generosity Thanks to the generous friends, donors and supporters of the Phoenix Community Pantry at First Presbyterian Church, we have grown from being able to supply food to 11 recipients per month in 2011 to over 800 recipients per month currently. Phoenix Food Project rocks! Bringing in over 3,400 pounds of goods during each of six collections per year. Stuff the Truck, this month at Ray's Market in Phoenix, will fill out our constantly dwindling supplies. PETRO has stepped up with so many goodies and Thanksgiving dinner for our community kitchen! Hoorah for Phoenix! We celebrate small town generosity at its best! Thank you from the grateful volunteers at the Phoenix Community Pantry at the First Phoenix Community Center! Karen Jones, Phoenix Road users should help carry the load I have noticed that those who voted declined to have homeowners pay for the transit cost in our county. Maybe that's because homeowner taxes are one of the highest in the country, and they are not the largest group. Taxing gas extra upsets some, because folks do not want those who drive electric or hybrid cars/trucks to pay less. So I was thinking, maybe we could have a user tax that is attached to the buying of new plates. That way everyone that uses the road pays the same amount. We could help businesses that have fleets of vehicles to tag by giving them discounts the larger the fleet. This way Jackson County could fund transit and other transportation. Clearly those who drive are a majority, and the majority can pay a little so a few do not have to pay it all. The numbers getting tags are high enough to keep the tax lower than the failed proposals. If we had passed the initiative for the undocumented to drive we would have even more money, but that has been decided. Just thinking. Judith Sanders, Medford Report the store I am responding to Mr. Bob Doggett's letter concerning the Oregon Trail cards printed Nov. 7. I have the privilege of receiving food stamps, as I am on a low fixed income. I think I use them wisely. Some people don't. I heard recently that the state is going to ban buying soda pop with food stamps. Great idea, as obesity is an epidemic! As to the store that let this person buy toys and Christmas decorations, they need to be reported. That is illegal. Please do so. Marie English, Medford Southeast plan is building just to build The city of Medford had a hearing on Thursday at City Hall about the plans for a Southeast Village Center at the crossroads of Barnett and North Phoenix. It's interesting that this development has been in the stages a long while; it has not been a "tortuous road" to doing what is best for the residential homes close by. One of the planners isn't even on the Planning Commission anymore. The rezoning changed to putting up to a 50,000-square-foot grocery store, when there is already an Albertsons directly kitty corner from them.  Our questions are: Is it constructive building or building to just build? There are empty pads at the site with Albertsons including a Hallmark that couldn't afford the increased rent. Beyond all the technical terminology, let's just say it like it is, building for the sake of building is not beneficial to area businesses that already exist and residential homes that want to be just that. Included is a proposed roundabout. Just ask people at the Highland roundabout, and the price tag for that. They also say it will make easier access walking or biking. We already have that.
