Fire restrictions increase on public land Above-normal temperatures, low humidity, high winds and no rain have prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry to increase restrictions on public use of lands the agency protects. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. today, the following activities are prohibited on all private, state, county and Bureau of Land Management land under ODF protection in Jackson and Josephine counties: Campfires except in designated campgrounds Use of vehicles except on improved roads free of flammable vegetation Smoking, except in vehicles on improved roads free of flammable vegetation Fireworks Debris burning (prohibited since July 1) Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, the following activities also are prohibited: Public chainsaw use Nonagricultural mowing of dry grass Nonagricultural, noncommercial use of power-driven machinery in areas of flammable vegetation. On the Wild and Scenic Section of the Rogue River, from Grave Creek to Marial, campfires are prohibited, although fuel-fired stoves or raised-bed briquette barbecues are permitted. Smoking is permitted only in boats on the river and on sand and gravel bars naturally free of flammable vegetation. Each party must carry at least one shovel and one bucket.
