The Challengers’ Ellie Brown put the match away with a kill. Cascade Christian led 24-22 when Phoenix benefited from a sideout. Brown then came through. For the Challengers, Madigan Smith, who had two blocks and five service aces, and Nicole Morse each notched 10 kills. Katelyn Smith had eight kills and Alyssa Brown racked up 35 assists to go with four aces. Adriana Mereida-Ford paced Phoenix with 10 kills and 18 digs, and Bailee Tally had three aces and 12 digs. Olivia Young added six kills. WILLAMETTE 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: At Eugene, last year’s Class 5A state runner-up and Southwest Conference newcomer Willamette kept North Medford at bay in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 victory. The Black Tornado (1-2, 1-2 SWC) grabbed brief leads in the first and second sets but wasn’t able to maintain its advantages due in large part to the play of Wolverines’ senior outside hitters Emily Eckart and Alycia Wocke. North Medford was paced by junior outside hitter Emily Carter’s eight kills and six digs, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Ripplinger registered five kills and seven digs. Sophomore middle hitter Karen Polotaivao added four kills. SOUTH EUGENE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1:  South Medford won the first set in the Southwest Conference match, 25-12, but the visiting Axemen took the next three, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. South Medford's Alyssa Vaughn had six kills, 10 digs and two aces, Jasmin Falls had six kills and five blocks, Trinity Russell recorded 15 digs and Kelsey Bartlett 20 assists and eight digs. The Panthers dropped to 0-2 in league and overall. CRATER 3, MAZAMA 0: At Central Point, Mazama’s serving was the best Crater had seen thus far but it wasn’t enough against the Comets, who collected a 25-8, 25-23, 25-21 nonconference win. The Comets (3-0) were able to stave off the Vikings in the second and third sets, in which Mazama tied Crater at 23-all and 20-all, respectively. Senior middle blocker Paige Berriochoa recorded nine kills and 14 digs and was the Comets’ most consistent serve-receive player. Junior outside hitter Destiny Fahndrich had four kills and 12 digs, senior outside hitter Kelsey Strouse added eight kills and senior setter Nicole Davis logged 27 assists. NORTH VALLEY 3, EAGLE POINT 1: At Merlin, North Valley awoke from a sluggish start for a 22-25, 25-17, 25-9, 25-20 nonconference victory. Ambur DeChenne and Taryn King both had a six-point service streaks in the third set. DeChenne scored three aces during her run and King had two of her team-high eight amid her spurt. The Knights (2-2) had 18 aces. King, a junior setter, also had 31 assists and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Haleigh Wagman amassed 18 kills and 17 digs, while junior libero Autumn Westergren led the Knights with 20 digs. ROGUE RIVER 3, RIDDLE 0: At Riddle, Rogue River’s attack from the service line was too much for Riddle as the Chieftains picked up a 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 nonleague triumph. Kortney Moore finished with 10 kills and six aces for the Chieftains (2-3), while Natalie Watkins recorded 12 aces and 17 assists. FOOTBALL HIDDEN VALLEY 41, DOUGLAS 6: At Murphy, Mike Hults ran for three touchdowns and passed for another for Hidden Valley in the nonconference win. Hults had 60 yards rushing on seven carries and completed 15 of 22 passes for 255 yards. His TD strike was 34 yards to Miles Alfred. Alfred had six catches for 98 yards.
