The Lions pushed aside many of the state’s other ranked squads en route to a 25-17, 25-18 victory over No. 5 Gresham in the championship of the 17th annual Rogue Valley Classic at North Medford High. The Southern Oregon Conference also made a strong showing at the 16-team tournament. Roseburg placed fourth and North Medford and Ashland tied for fifth. "I just see our league, particularly the top part, closing the gap in state," said North coach Ron Beick, whose team won the tournament in 2000. "There have been about four or five teams the last few years that have been a step ahead of everybody else. Now we’re consistently winning a game here or there and playing them close." Advertisement Eighth-ranked North Medford opened bracket play with a 25-21, 25-14 victory over North Bend. But the Tornado couldn’t survive a quarterfinal matchup with ninth-ranked Sheldon, losing 25-19, 23-25, 15-12. "I think people look beyond the fact that our team is very young because of our record," said Beick, whose team entered the tournament atop the SOC at 6-0. "The fact that we got into the upper bracket and played some very good teams is great." Teams were bracketed based on their season records. Senior setter Allanah Munson, sophomore middle Lauren Berger, senior outside Jessica Durham and defensive standouts Heidi Sandgren and Kelsey Hamilton all played well for the Black Tornado. North and Ashland, which defeated Bend in the first round before losing to Roseburg in the quarterfinals, decided to accept a fifth-place tie rather than play out the match and risk injury with tired players. Roseburg downed Klamath Union in the opening round then, after slipping past Ashland, dropped a 25-16, 16-25, 15-7 contest to Sheldon in the third-fourth-place match. South Medford also won its first-round matchup with Thurston, 25-18, 25-15, but fell to Gresham in two games in the quarterfinals. Eagle Point dropped its only bracket match, 25-14, 25-19, to Marshfield and Crater went down, 25-5, 25-8, to West Linn. Rogue Valley Classic FIRST ROUND Gresham def.
