The first could be connected with the Ashland Forest Resiliency Stewardship Project, launched five years ago. The project is funded with $6 million from federal resources, U.S. Forest Service grants and other grant programs to restore the watershed area above Ashland. More likely, he said, the logs are coming from private timberlands south of Mount Ashland in California. Fruit Growers Supply Co., owns 335,000 acres of timberland in California, Oregon and Washington, including 120,000 acres in Northern California. "They lost a lot of timber to fires, and they may be getting the logs off that property," Schott said. Fruit Growers once operated a large mill just off Interstate 5 in Hilt, and still has an office on the site.
