Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 31, 1915 HOOPER CALLS ON KLAMATH CAMPERS The following story from the Eugene Register is the first inkling the authorities have had of John Austin Hooper since he left E. Kroll at Rogue River the evening of his escape. There is a striking resemblance between the farewell words of Hooper to both men: "W.L. Orr, living on Fourth Avenue West, had the novel experience of sitting down to a campfire in eastern Oregon and entertaining a noted highwayman, Hooper, unawares. Hooper, known all over the coast as the gentleman burglar, who recently commandeered an automobile in Grants Pass to make his escape from the jail, after robbing a bank, walked in on Mr. Orr, who was with a party and was camping on a ranch he owns near Fort Klamath. "The man came up, talked a while in his usual smooth and entertaining way. After remaining for a time he pulled out his watch and said that he has a ways to go, and guessed he had better 'hit the trail,' and departed." Shortly afterward officers telephoned that Hooper would be along that way and to look out for him, but he had gone, and no more trace of him has been found. Mr. Orr was formerly of the harness business here. FOREST BLAZES UNDER CONTROL BY SUN-DOWN No new forest fires have been reported today in Jackson County, and all now burning are under control, according to reports received by the federal and state forestry services, and the Jackson County Fire Patrol Association. The fire in the Butte Falls district, which was the most serious, will be under control by sun-down, some of the fire-fighters sent out returning this morning. The Jackson County Fire Patrol Association will import bloodhounds for the trailing of firebugs. An active effort will be made to apprehend some of the incendiaries who have been responsible for 90 per cent of the fires this summer. As high as 30 fires at a time have been set in the Trail district, and with dogs on the scene in three or four hours, the arsonists could have been caught. The fires are set for the purpose of furnishing employment. One of the matters to come before the next session of the grand jury will be incendiarism.
