The chairman of the Board of Commissioners asks for a donation. What perception does that create? The donation is made and a favorable vote follows. Herein lies one of the many problems with Doug Breidenthal. Oregon elective campaigns might provide loopholes and let it slip through. This wasn't for an Oregon elective office. Ethics provisions limit gifts to $50 from a single source that could reasonably be known to have a legislative or administrative interest. Yet, Breidenthal asked for and received thousands of dollars. How he's handled the scrutiny is telling. Belligerently rebuffing the county administrator’s gracious offer to self-report, Breidenthal preferred a coverup. Not getting it, he blamed the administrator rather than accepting responsibility. He claimed retaliation, undue influence and insubordination. His attorney since argued to dismiss the complaint on legal exceptions. That didn’t work. With the Ethics Commission set to investigate, Breidenthal faults the administrator for not properly studying ethics laws. He also now claims laws are confusing and he is set to champion a fix. He’s been voted out as chairman, and off the O&C Counties board. He's become a pariah. When one dances around ethics laws, they eventually fall. Buck Eichler Medford Cannabis controversy Enduring the foul odors caused by growing cannabis through harvest time cannot be escaped. Neighbors cannot use their yards or patios due to the strong pungent odors from blooming season through October. Neighbors' property values are depleted immensely, or they can't sell. Why are we spending money on something that's illegal according to the federal government, also damaging to our young people? It's not for the medical field, it's another hallucinating drug and will in most cases lead to stronger drugs. Ask Dr. Phil.com , he's one of our leading doctors in drug rehabilitation. We need to also respect that neighbor's rights by enforcing the property line 250-foot rule proposal. Growers can build a facility to grow indoors with the proper filtering system. This is not about protecting health. It's all about money. Please, commissioners do the right thing! We're hearing sob stories of why the growers can't grow for medical purposes. Let them buy from the legal commercial growers. Commissioners, do not buy into "it's better to use marijuana than alcohol." Two wrongs don't make a right. Also the drug lords aren't shipping alcohol across the borders. Do we need to say more? Amos Cates Medford We're on our own We cannot expect a deus ex machina to swoop onto the world stage and untangle our web of problems. Harsh though reality may be, we must bring order out of the chaos we’ve created through constant warfare and serial blunders in other areas of life. No dramatic contrivance or illusive being will ever save us from ourselves. We must cope with natural disasters as best we can. Those of our making, such as Earth’s deterioration from carbon pollution, we can mitigate — unless we prefer denial. Throughout evolutionary history, humans have been both troublemakers and problem-solvers. In this early 21st century, too many people still foray into consciousness each day deciding what kind of trouble they’ll cause, how many lives they’ll disrupt — or end. World conditions will improve when war-cravers and others who thrive on turmoil seek peaceful solutions to problems rather than perpetuate warfare that drains treasuries and detracts from life-enhancing endeavors. Whatever we do, we’re on our own. No rescuer of humankind exists outside reality. Believing otherwise does nothing more than salve the human psyche.
