Representatives from the "small-box" retailer, which has more than 12,000 stores in the U.S., are scheduled to be on hand for a 6 p.m. public hearing Thursday at City Hall, 420 Sixth Ave. City Council will give citizens a chance to weigh in on the proposal before making a decision in coming weeks. The project is proposed by Embree Asset Group, which has built many stores for the company. Charlie Pelletier, development manager for Embree, which builds up to two dozen of the chain's stores each year, said he felt Gold Hill would be a good match for the company's stores. Dollar General Corporation was founded in Scottsville, Ky., in 1939 and now boasts stores in 43 states. The company has built 10 stores in Oregon since last spring and would like to open additional outlets in Southern Oregon "as soon as possible," including a store proposed for Talent, Pelletier said. "We believe Dollar General has got great products and great prices, and we believe the demographics of (Gold Hill) are an ideal fit for what the company has to offer," Pelletier said, noting that the retailer seeks to establish stores in small, rural towns with limited shopping options. "They're a low-price retailer serving a rural demographic. They go where Walmart stores typically don't. Our hope is that, Thursday night, the residents of Gold Hill will appreciate what Dollar General provides and that they'll want us there." If approved, the store would be constructed to match surrounding structures, with landscaping and parking matched "seamlessly," Pelletier said. Mayor Jan Fish and city councilors declined to comment about the project on the advice of city legal counsel, but Fish said the town could use some new business. "I think there is a great need for new business in town. I'd like to see some diversification, and I'd also like to see some sort of medical presence or other professional business," Fish said. "It will be interesting to get citizen input."
