Nye, 48, was born in Portland, Ore., December 31, 1967 and passed away in Medford, Ore. May 25, 2016. He is the son of George and Sandra McCrory Nye. Mike made childhood friends in Pocatello, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah, before moving to Medford, Ore. where he attended Medford Senior High School for his senior year. Six weeks after graduation in June, 1986, while serving as a summer counselor at a church camp, Mike had a water accident that resulted in immediate quadriplegia. Following an extensive time of recovery and rehabilitation, Mike learned to drive a specially equipped van that allowed him to attend classes at Southern Oregon University. After that, he became a customer service rep at Home Medical, first as a phone resource person for those who needed insurance and equipment information. Later, he served as a salesperson for wheelchairs and other equipment from his wheelchair. Mike was also active in the Boy Scouts of America. First, as a Cub Scout, he later came one project short of earning his Eagle Scout award. After his injury, he became a Cub Scout leader. His chair, rather than being a hindrance, was attractive to the boys, and put him at their level for communicating, instructing, and playing with his young charges. Mike suffered countless indignities and challenges during his nearly thirty years of captivity to his brokenness, but also became very inventive in finding ways to meet his challenges and accomplish what he wanted to do. Michael is survived by his parents, George and Sandra Nye; sister, Linda Nye Tripp and brother-in-law, Andrew Tripp; niece, Teresa Tripp, and nephew, Derek Tripp. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized by his father in 1977. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 4, 2016 at Perl/Siskiyou chapel in Medford.
