Despite cold and windy conditions, Lawson finished in second place after the first four (of seven) events in the heptathlon with 2,384 points — the most for an SOU performer after Day 1 since 2001. The former North Medford High multi-sport star easily posted personal bests in the high jump (5-1¼ ) and in the shot put (32-5½ ) in her first career multi-event competition. "Brittany is on pace for 4,000 points, which should put her in contention to qualify for (the NAIA meet)," Raider coach Michael Jones said. "She had a great first day, especially considering the elements." OIT's Michelle Klaja leads with 2,700 points, and Raiders Danielle Duda (1,956) and Rachel Hinze (1,944) are sixth and seventh, respectively. Meanwhile, former North Valley High athlete Mark Hiler is fifth after five of the 10 events in the league decathlon with 2,755 points. The Raiders pounded out 25 hits in the nonconference sweep. Rock, a junior second baseman, went 5-for-7 in the two games. The Canby native equaled the national mark for triples in a game that was set the previous Wednesday by Eastern Oregon’s Vanessa Shelton at Albertson College. Rock, who raised her season batting average 32 percentage points to .267, joined football standouts Dan Miles and Dusty McGrorty in the NAIA record books. SOU is 20-15 overall.
