LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 16 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 16, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Dec. 16, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Obamacare's a great deal I recently signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act's website, Healthcare.gov. With the exception of one computer glitch, which was fixed in less than 24 hours, my overall online experience was excellent. Compared to my previous policy, my monthly premium is $85 less, my yearly deductible is $2,300 less, and my coinsurance after deductible is $0, as opposed to 30 percent coinsurance after deductible with my previous policy. Considering there is no reduction in coverage, I'd say Obamacare is a great deal. Ken Hawes, Eagle Point Support law enforcement I saw a photo today of a dozen police officers killed in routine traffic stops in the last few weeks. There was no media or citizen outcry. Tonight I started to watch ABC Nightly News but quit after hearing a quote of how few cops are indicted when killing someone in the line of duty. I've known a cop and a deputy who killed suspects. Both officers were stressed for a long time from taking someone's life although the two perpetrators were in the act of committing crimes. With the media and citizens jumping on the bandwagon of "justice" without thinking of consequences, it won't be long before high-caliber men and women may not consider law enforcement careers. Why would they? The mainstream national media is keeping anti-cop emotions running high and citizens are buying into it. As a result of this hostility, just suppose, when responding to a life-threatening situation, an officer hesitates during that split-second decision. The life that is snuffed out might be yours or even mine. After a few cases of this, what will the media and citizens say then? I'll continue to support law enforcement. They are the good guys. Margaret Bradburn, Eagle Point Legacy is saddening It saddens me to think of the legacy of my generation. Humans are able to deny reality and pass the consequences on to their children. We have the capacity to know what is right and wrong, yet not act responsibly. We seem to be a species bent on pursuit of short-term interests, even though we know the long-term repercussions of climate change. To see billions of people running toward a cliff is a bit overwhelming. No wonder I turn to poetry and watercolors, family and friends, and quiet paths in the woods. Douglas Hillman Strong, Ashland The rest of the story After reading the paper's article on Nov. 22 regarding Mountain View Estates, a question should be asked. How could someone who had a hand in altering stream flow and changing fish-bearing habitat raise such a squawk over a neighbor who has done nothing wrong to Bear Creek? Hopefully inquiring minds will find out the rest of the story concerning the real environmental problem. Eric Hunt, Medford Looking in the wrong place Mr. Borovansky is looking for the outrage in the Brown killing in the wrong places. He will find it in the manner that the news media, especially TV, reported the initial incident and thereby incited the riots that followed by repeatedly broadcasting the interview with one witness, Brown’s friend, who incorrectly insisted that Brown had his hands above his head and was shouting “Don’t shoot!” If this had been true, the officer would have been indicted. But apparently the news media interviewed no other witnesses and made no effort to verify the story of their source. Unfortunately the days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite are long gone. The news media have joined the Enquirer and other scandal tabloids to emphasize entertainment and the opinions of “experts” over professional investigative reporting of facts.
