Sprint cuts won't hit valley hard Sprint's Medford operations will be largely spared when the telecom giant sheds 6,000 workers in its 50,000 worldwide work force. The Kansas City, Mo.-based firm will close its Tualatin call center, putting 100 people out of work. But regional spokesman Tom Yates said Thursday that few of the 270 employees at the Medford call center will be affected. Sprint has about 1,000 Oregon employees, many in Hood River. The company's high-speed integrated voice and networking ION unit and MMDS broadband wireless product sales force will shoulder most of the layoffs, Yates said. That could affect three to five local workers. "Sprint is the last of the big telecoms to restructure and it's coming in specialized areas," Yates said. "Hood River will have a minimal impact and cuts will come here (Hood River) if anywhere, and not Medford."
